The Indian Football League (IFL) continues its opening weekend with a compelling Sunday double-header on March 1, 2026, as Dempo SC host Real Kashmir FC in Goa, while Shillong Lajong FC welcome Rajasthan United FC in Meghalaya.
With the league’s new format placing added emphasis on every early result, both fixtures carry significance beyond just three points. The IFL will be telecast live on DD Sports and streamed on the Waves app.
Few clubs in Indian football carry the historical weight of Dempo SC. The Goan giants dominated the national top flight between 2005 and 2012, winning a record five league titles during that golden era. Now competing in the second tier, they are intent on restoring their stature.
Head coach Samir Naik has made the club’s ambition clear. “Whenever Dempo take part in any competition, we take it seriously. We want to become champions,” he said ahead of the opener.
Dempo finished sixth last season but showed encouraging signs in domestic competitions. Their Super Cup campaign stood out, where an all-Indian squad held ISL heavyweights East Bengal and Mohun Bagan to goalless draws. That defensive solidity, combined with calculated additions in the transfer window, suggests a side ready to challenge for promotion.
The arrivals of striker Marcus Joseph and defender Aubin Kouakou add experience and balance to a squad that blends youth with structure. At Fatorda, Dempo traditionally control possession, build through midfield, and rely on disciplined defensive transitions. Reasserting dominance at home will be central to their campaign.

Standing in their way are Real Kashmir FC, a side defined by resilience and tactical discipline. The Srinagar-based outfit, nicknamed the Snow Leopards, are known for their compact defensive shape and quick counter-attacking transitions. Head coach Ishfaq Ahmed acknowledged the challenge of facing Dempo away. “Dempo are historically a very strong side, especially at home in Fatorda. They have their philosophy; they dominate on the ground and play good football,” he said.
He also highlighted the psychological aspect of a season opener. “The first 20 minutes in a season opener are about controlling your nerves and performing to your best ability.”

For Real Kashmir, adaptation will be crucial particularly to Goa’s coastal humidity and conditions vastly different from Srinagar’s climate. Midfielder Mohammad Inaam pointed to Dempo’s recent form against top opposition but remained confident. “They played very good football against Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. This season will be equally tough because every team is strong, but we believe we can do it.”
The clash presents a stylistic contrast: Dempo’s possession-based structure against Real Kashmir’s organised defensive blocks and swift transitions. Early momentum could shape not just this fixture but the trajectory of their respective campaigns.
Shillong Lajong FC vs Rajasthan United FC
SSA Stadium, Shillong | 18:30 IST
Later in the evening, the spotlight shifts to Shillong, where Shillong Lajong FC will look to capitalise on one of the most passionate home environments in Indian football. The Meghalaya-based club have built their identity around promoting local talent rather than relying heavily on high-profile signings. Head coach Viru Thapa emphasised the importance of home support. “Our fans are our 12th man.
They will motivate us to play our best. The fan support of Shillong is our pride and it is evident with our Durand Cup results,” he said.
Lajong’s approach prioritises cohesion and collective pressing. The familiarity among players, many of whom have progressed through regional systems, provides tactical understanding and chemistry particularly valuable in high-altitude conditions at the SSA Stadium.
Rajasthan United FC, however, arrive with renewed ambition. The Jaipur-based side have undergone restructuring, bringing in key foreign signings and reinforcing multiple areas of the squad. Interim head coach Vikas Rawat has set clear objectives. “Football is always challenging. It doesn’t matter if you are playing home or away. We are planning to get promotion to ISL; that’s our only aim this season,” he stated.
Rajasthan are expected to adopt a controlled, possession-oriented style, attempting to dictate tempo and neutralise the home crowd’s influence. Their ability to manage transitions and maintain defensive discipline will be tested against Lajong’s energetic pressing.
Captain Bhabindra Malla Thakuri expressed confidence ahead of the trip. “We are motivated to get three points in the away game. We have been together for some time now. It is our time to deliver.” The fixture carries significance for both sides. Shillong Lajong will aim to convert home support into tangible results, while Rajasthan United seek an early statement in a promotion-focused campaign.

With the IFL’s competitive structure placing importance on consistency from the outset, Sunday’s results could influence early standings and confidence levels.
Dempo and Real Kashmir offer a battle of tradition versus resilience, while Shillong Lajong and Rajasthan United represent contrasting developmental philosophies and ambitions. As the second tier begins to take shape, these fixtures serve as early indicators of which clubs are prepared not just to compete but to contend.
