Rajasthan United FC produced a composed and efficient second-half display to defeat Chanmari FC 2-0 at the Vidhyadhar Nagar Stadium, moving temporarily to the top of the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025-26 standings.

Goals from Naoba Meitei and Amadou Soukouna ensured the Desert Warriors secured all three points in a performance defined by patience and precision.

The victory takes Rajasthan United to 11 points from six matches, continuing their strong run at home, while Chanmari FC remain in eighth place with five points. Soukouna, whose long-range strike sealed the contest, was deservedly named Player of the Match.

Cagey First Half Under Testing Conditions

The opening half offered limited goalmouth action, as both sides struggled to find rhythm in challenging conditions. Chanmari FC, under new head coach Dipankur Sharma, showed early attacking intent with a reshuffled lineup. The introduction of foreign defenders Kyle Degelman and Marlon Angel added defensive stability, while KC Malsawmsanga was deployed to inject pace in the final third.

Chanmari looked sharper in transition during the early exchanges. Malsawmsanga and Jota frequently stretched Rajasthan’s defensive line with runs down the flanks, attempting to exploit spaces out wide. However, their deliveries into the box lacked the necessary precision to convert promising moves into clear chances.

Rajasthan United, in contrast, adopted a more measured approach. Head coach Vikrant Sharma’s unchanged lineup focused on building from the back, relying on short passing sequences to control possession. When required, they shifted gears with direct balls aimed at striker Amadou Soukouna, who provided a focal point in attack.

The best opportunity of the first half fell to Rajasthan United when Thomyo Shimray found space inside the box but failed to connect cleanly, sending his effort wide. At the other end, Chanmari’s Suanngaihmuana could not generate enough power on a header, allowing the goalkeeper to deal with the attempt comfortably.

With both teams lacking cutting edge in the final third, the first half ended goalless.

Tactical Shift Turns the Game

The turning point came immediately after the break. Vikrant Sharma introduced Naoba Meitei at half-time, a move that altered the tempo and attacking dynamics of the home side.

Just seven minutes into the second half, Meitei made an instant impact. Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, the winger showcased individual brilliance by dribbling past Degelman before finishing from a tight angle. The goal broke the deadlock and injected confidence into Rajasthan United’s play.

Meitei’s directness added a new dimension to Rajasthan’s attack, forcing Chanmari’s defence to retreat deeper and opening spaces in midfield.

Rajasthan United capitalised on their momentum soon after. In the 60th minute, Soukouna doubled the lead with a spectacular long-range effort. After Gautam Virwani regained possession in midfield, he played a simple forward pass to the striker, who took advantage of the space ahead.

With minimal hesitation, Soukouna unleashed a powerful strike from distance that beat the goalkeeper convincingly. It was a goal that not only reflected his confidence but also underlined Rajasthan’s clinical approach in the second half.

Game Management and Defensive Solidity

With a two-goal cushion, Rajasthan United shifted their focus to game management. The home side tightened their defensive structure, maintaining compact lines and limiting Chanmari’s space in attacking areas.

Chanmari FC responded by pushing more players forward, attempting to find a way back into the contest. However, their efforts were hindered by a lack of precision in the final third. Crosses into the box were either overhit or comfortably dealt with by Rajasthan’s defence.

Despite increased possession in the latter stages, Chanmari struggled to create clear-cut opportunities. Rajasthan’s disciplined defensive setup ensured that the visitors were kept at bay, preserving their clean sheet.

The match highlighted Rajasthan United’s ability to adapt and respond effectively. After a relatively quiet first half, the introduction of Naoba Meitei changed the course of the game, demonstrating the impact of tactical substitutions. Soukouna’s performance further reinforced his importance to the team, not just as a target man but also as a player capable of producing moments of individual brilliance.

For Chanmari FC, the match showed glimpses of attacking promise, particularly in wide areas. However, their inability to convert possession into meaningful chances remains a concern as they look to climb the table. Rajasthan United’s 2-0 victory was a display of controlled aggression and clinical finishing. By capitalising on key moments in the second half, they secured a crucial win that temporarily places them at the top of the standings.

As the league progresses, performances like these where patience is matched with efficiency could prove decisive in shaping their campaign.
