The National Rugby 15s Championship Division 1 kicked off in spectacular fashion at the Kalinga Stadium, with an action-packed opening day delivering dominant performances, tight contests, and a glimpse of the rising competitiveness within Indian club rugby.

Among the standout teams on the opening day were Bombay Gymkhana and KISS Rugby Club, both of whom secured convincing victories to progress to the men’s semifinals of the premier domestic rugby competition. Organised by the Indian Rugby Football Union with support from the Odisha government and the Odisha Rugby Football Association, the tournament brings together the country’s top club teams and serves as an important platform for talent development.

Bangalore RC and Sergeant Institute Advance from Pre-Quarterfinals

The day’s proceedings began with the pre-quarterfinal fixtures, where teams battled for a place in the last eight. Bangalore Rugby Club delivered one of the most clinical performances of the day, defeating Odisha RC with a convincing 24–0 victory. Bangalore’s disciplined defence ensured Odisha RC were unable to register any points, while their attacking unit capitalised on scoring opportunities to comfortably seal their place in the quarterfinals.

The second pre-quarterfinal saw Sergeant Institute Rugby Club overcome Delhi Lions Rugby Club with a 21–5 victory.

The Kolkata-based outfit, which draws strength from the legacy of the Kolkata Police fraternity, displayed strong tactical awareness and structured play. Their disciplined execution on both ends of the field ensured they progressed smoothly to the next stage of the competition.

KISS Edge Past Rebels in Tight Quarterfinal

The quarterfinals began with a highly competitive clash between Rebels Rugby Club and host side KISS Rugby Club. The first half produced a thrilling contest as both teams traded tries and defensive pressure, leaving the match evenly poised at 14–14 at halftime. Backed by passionate home support in Bhubaneswar, KISS stepped up their performance in the second half. Their attacking line began to find greater rhythm, while their defensive unit tightened its structure to limit Rebels’ scoring opportunities.

Gradually pulling away, KISS secured a 30–14 victory, earning a well-deserved place in the semifinals and delighting the local supporters. The performance underlined KISS’s growing reputation as one of the rising forces in Indian club rugby.

Bombay Gymkhana Deliver Statement Win

The final match of the day witnessed a dominant performance from Bombay Gymkhana, one of the most historic rugby institutions in the country. Facing Calcutta Cricket and Football Club, Bombay Gymkhana delivered a commanding display to secure a resounding 46–0 victory.

From the outset, Bombay Gymkhana established control of the match through powerful forward play and quick transitions in attack. Their backline capitalised on gaps in the opposition defence, producing a series of tries that effectively sealed the result well before the final whistle.

Equally impressive was their defensive organisation, which prevented CC&FC from gaining any meaningful attacking momentum throughout the contest. The emphatic victory not only secured Bombay Gymkhana’s semifinal berth but also sent a strong message to the rest of the competition.

Teams Progressing in the Tournament

With the conclusion of the opening day’s matches, four teams successfully advanced in the men’s competition:

  • Bombay Gymkhana
  • KISS Rugby Club
  • Bangalore Rugby Club
  • Sergeant Institute Rugby Club

The teams eliminated from the main draw will now compete in the Plate competition, where they will battle for final positions between fifth and tenth place.
