Jamshedpur FC produced a strong second-half display and scored twice late in the game to defeat FC Goa 2-0 in the Indian Super League 2025-26 at the JRD Tata Sports Complex on Friday night.
After a tightly contested opening hour, goals from Mohammed Sanan and Madih Talal in the closing stages secured all three points for Owen Coyle’s side and lifted the Red Miners to the top of the league table with 21 points from 11 matches. FC Goa, meanwhile, slipped to third place with 19 points after suffering only their second defeat of the campaign.
The victory also reinforced Jamshedpur’s growing status as genuine title contenders this season. Having already dismantled Chennaiyin FC 4-1 in their previous fixture, they followed it up with another mature and tactically disciplined performance against one of the league’s strongest possession-based teams. Madih Talal, who controlled large periods of the game from midfield and scored the decisive second goal deep into stoppage time, was deservedly named Player of the Match.
Jamshedpur head coach Owen Coyle retained the same starting lineup that impressed against Chennaiyin, while FC Goa manager Manolo Márquez was forced into one change with Mohammed Yasir replacing the injured Dejan Dražić. FC Goa began the match with more possession and looked sharp during the opening exchanges. Within the first minute, Muhammed Nemil tested goalkeeper Albino Gomes with a long-range effort as the visitors attempted to settle quickly into their passing rhythm.
However, the flow of the game was briefly interrupted due to a thunderstorm, and once play resumed, Jamshedpur gradually began taking control.
The hosts looked more threatening every time they attacked, especially through the pace and direct running of Mohammed Sanan down the flanks. Around the midway point of the first half, Sanan forced a smart low save from Hrithik Tiwari after cutting inside from the left.
Jamshedpur continued to create opportunities from distance as Lalhriatpuia Chawngthu and Nikhil Barla both tried their luck from outside the box. Madih Talal, meanwhile, quietly dictated the tempo in midfield, constantly finding pockets of space between Goa’s lines. Talal nearly broke the deadlock before half-time when his header drifted narrowly wide, and moments later he again tested Tiwari with a sharp effort from range.
Despite FC Goa enjoying spells of possession, Jamshedpur entered the break looking the more dangerous side.
The second half followed a similar pattern.
Jamshedpur’s midfield pairing of Talal and Nikola Stojanović controlled the central areas effectively, limiting Goa’s ability to progress the ball through midfield. Goa struggled to create clear openings, relying largely on speculative efforts from distance through Nemil and Yasir. Albino Gomes, however, remained largely untroubled.
Recognising the need for fresh energy in attack, Coyle introduced Japanese midfielder Rei Tachikawa in the 74th minute a substitution that would ultimately prove decisive.
Jamshedpur continued pushing forward, sensing vulnerability in Goa’s defence. Striker Messi Bouli came close shortly after the substitution when he rose highest from a set-piece but failed to direct his header on target.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 83rd minute.
From a dangerous corner delivered by Talal, Tachikawa’s header caused confusion inside the six-yard box. The ball bounced awkwardly among the defenders before Mohammed Sanan reacted quickest, producing a clever flick between the legs of defender Boris Singh to guide the ball into the net. The goal sparked celebrations across the stadium and rewarded Jamshedpur for their persistence throughout the evening.
FC Goa attempted to respond immediately and pushed more numbers forward in the closing minutes, but Jamshedpur remained organised defensively. The centre-backs dealt calmly with crosses into the box, while the midfield continued to disrupt Goa’s build-up play.
As the visitors committed further bodies in search of an equaliser, spaces began opening up for the hosts on the counterattack.
Deep into stoppage time, Jamshedpur delivered the final blow.
Messi Bouli’s aerial ball into the box created panic in the Goa defence, and substitute Ronney Willson failed to clear convincingly under pressure. The loose ball fell kindly to Talal just outside the area, and the Moroccan midfielder calmly drilled a precise low strike into the corner to make it 2-0 and end the contest. The goal capped another outstanding display from Talal, who has increasingly become the creative heartbeat of this Jamshedpur side.
For FC Goa, the defeat highlighted their struggles against aggressive, physically intense teams capable of disrupting their passing game. While Manolo Márquez’s side still remains firmly in the title race, they were second-best for large parts of this encounter and lacked their usual attacking fluency. For Jamshedpur FC, however, the result felt significant beyond just three points.
The Red Miners now sit at the top of the ISL standings, and perhaps more importantly, they are beginning to look like a side capable of managing matches in multiple ways — whether through possession, transitions, defensive organisation or late-game composure.
With momentum building and confidence growing under Owen Coyle, Jamshedpur’s title ambitions are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
