Hockey India Opens Player Registrations for Hero Hockey India League 2027

In a significant step towards building on the momentum of its successful revival, Hockey India has officially opened player registrations for the Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2027.
The registration window commenced on May 15, 2026, and will remain open until July 24, setting the stage for the much-anticipated player auction scheduled for September 2026. The upcoming edition of the league, slated for January 2027, is expected to further strengthen its position as one of the premier platforms in global hockey, bringing together top domestic and international talent.
The return of the Hockey India League in the 2024–25 season marked a turning point for Indian hockey’s domestic structure. After a prolonged hiatus, the league re-emerged with renewed focus, attracting strong participation and fan engagement. The 2025–26 season built on that foundation, featuring eight men’s teams and four women’s teams, alongside a competitive format that delivered high-quality matches.
The growing scale of participation reflects the league’s increasing credibility. More than 1,000 players registered for the previous auction, including over 500 Indian men, 350 Indian women, and more than 240 international players. Such numbers underline the league’s transformation into a truly global competition.
For the 2027 edition, registrations have been opened to players from a wide range of hockey-playing nations.
Men’s Eligible Nations: India, Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, England, Argentina, Germany, Spain, Ireland, France, New Zealand, South Africa, Malaysia, Japan
Women’s Eligible Nations: India, Netherlands, Argentina, Belgium, China, Spain, England, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, United States, Ireland, Scotland, Japan
The inclusion of top hockey nations ensures a high level of competition while also creating opportunities for Indian players to compete alongside and against some of the best in the world. This exposure is critical for bridging the gap between domestic and international hockey standards.
The player auction, scheduled for September 2026, will once again be a key event. Franchises will build their squads based on strategy, form, and team balance, creating opportunities for both emerging and experienced players. The open registration model ensures inclusivity, allowing a wide pool of players to enter the system. From junior prospects to international stars, the auction will feature a diverse mix of talent.
This structure also adds a competitive element, as players are evaluated not just on reputation but on recent performances and potential.
One of the most significant aspects of the league’s revival has been the parallel growth of the women’s competition. The previous season saw SG Pipers clinch the women’s title, highlighting the increasing competitiveness and visibility of women’s hockey in India. By including multiple international teams and expanding participation, HIL has created a platform where women athletes can gain consistent exposure at a high level something that has historically been limited.
With registrations now open, attention will gradually shift towards the auction and team formations. The 2027 edition is expected to build on the success of previous seasons, with higher participation, improved competition standards, and greater global interest. For Hockey India, the objective is clear establish the league as a long-term pillar of the sport’s development in the country.
The opening of player registrations for the Hero Hockey India League 2027 marks the beginning of another important chapter for Indian hockey. What started as a revival has now evolved into a structured, globally recognised competition that is shaping the future of the sport. As players from across the world prepare to enter the auction pool, the league continues to reinforce its role not just as a tournament, but as a platform for growth, exposure, and excellence.
For Indian hockey, the HIL is no longer just an event it is an ecosystem.
