East Bengal stand on the edge of history.

After more than two decades without a national top-flight league title, the Red-and-Gold Brigade head into the final day of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season knowing that one strong performance could finally end years of frustration and underachievement. On Thursday night at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan, East Bengal will face Inter Kashi in what is effectively the biggest league match the club has played in recent history.

The stakes could not be higher. Twenty-two years after winning the 2003-04 National Football League under the legendary Subhash Bhowmick, East Bengal are now within touching distance of lifting their maiden ISL league shield and reclaiming their place at the summit of Indian football.

Heading into the final round of fixtures, East Bengal sit top of the ISL standings with 23 points from 12 matches, level on points with arch-rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant but ahead on goal difference. East Bengal currently possess a +18 goal difference compared to Mohun Bagan’s +13. That small numerical edge could prove decisive in a title race that has gone down to the wire.

Five teams still remain mathematically alive in the championship race East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mumbai City FC, Punjab FC and Jamshedpur FC but East Bengal hold the clearest pathway to the trophy. A victory against Inter Kashi would almost certainly guarantee the title unless Mohun Bagan defeat Sporting Club Delhi by a margin six goals greater than East Bengal’s own winning margin.

There are also draw scenarios that could work in East Bengal’s favour depending on results elsewhere, but inside the club, the message remains simple:
win the game.

The emotional weight surrounding the occasion has intensified further after Sunday’s dramatic Kolkata Derby. East Bengal came agonisingly close to placing one hand on the trophy before conceding a late equaliser against Mohun Bagan in a tense 1-1 draw. The result left the title race unresolved and ensured that the pressure would carry into the final day.

Yet head coach Oscar Bruzon believes his players are mentally prepared for the challenge ahead.

“Tomorrow, there are still five teams that can become champions,” Bruzon said ahead of the match. “It is going to be a very important day, but we have the advantage because we are only focused on our own performance.”

The Spaniard also emphasized the importance of emotional control in such a high-pressure situation.

“Right now, there is no room for emotion. There is only focus,” Bruzon said. “We need to stay calm because tomorrow we have to transfer everything mentally, technically, tactically and psychologically into our performance.”

That mentality has become central to East Bengal’s remarkable transformation this season.

From Strugglers to Title Contenders

For years, East Bengal struggled to establish themselves after entering the ISL era. Coaching instability, inconsistent recruitment, and defensive vulnerabilities repeatedly prevented the club from challenging seriously near the top of the table. This season has been different.

Under Bruzon, East Bengal have evolved into one of the league’s most organised and resilient teams. They have suffered only one defeat in 12 matches and built their title challenge on defensive discipline, structured pressing, and clinical attacking moments. The improvement has been dramatic enough to completely alter expectations surrounding the club.

Now, instead of merely chasing playoff qualification, East Bengal are ninety minutes away from becoming champions. The attacking burden will once again fall heavily on Youssef Ezzejjari and Miguel Figueira. Ezzejjari enters the final day as the league’s leading scorer with 10 goals and has consistently delivered in decisive moments throughout the campaign.

The Moroccan striker admitted the magnitude of the occasion is impossible to ignore.

“This is our final,” Ezzejjari said. “We will go there and give 100 percent on the field. We will try to get the three points.” At the same time, he warned against underestimating Inter Kashi.

“For sure, Inter Kashi will also give everything. They are a good team and it will not be an easy game,” he added.

East Bengal will receive a boost with Souvik Chakrabarti returning after suspension, although Bipin Singh remains doubtful after suffering dehydration during the derby. Saul Crespo and Naorem Mahesh Singh are still unavailable through injury. Inter Kashi arrive in Kolkata with freedom and little external pressure. The newcomers have already shown this season that they can trouble stronger opponents and notably managed to hold Mohun Bagan earlier in the campaign. Head coach Arnab Mondal insisted his side will not simply defend against East Bengal.

“We don’t have anything to lose,” Mondal said. “We will play with freedom.” That approach could make the contest even more unpredictable.

For East Bengal supporters, Thursday night represents far more than a regular league fixture. It is an opportunity to finally erase years of disappointment and restore the club’s stature at the highest level of Indian football. The pressure will be enormous. The expectations even greater.

But after 22 years of waiting, East Bengal are now one win away from rewriting their modern history.
