The Indian Super League, ISL 2025-26 season heads toward one of the most dramatic finishes in league history as Punjab FC, Mumbai City FC, and Jamshedpur FC prepare for a decisive final night where every goal could alter the destination of the title.

With East Bengal and Mohun Bagan currently leading the standings on 23 points, the chasing trio still retain mathematical hopes of lifting the ISL crown heading into Thursday’s simultaneous kick-offs across the country. Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC will face each other directly at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, while Jamshedpur FC host Odisha FC at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in another fixture carrying enormous consequences.

The scenarios remain complicated, but one reality is clear:
any slip-up could instantly end a team’s championship hopes.

The headline clash of the evening comes in New Delhi where Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC meet in what is effectively a knockout encounter disguised as a league match. Both teams enter the final round level on 22 points, knowing only victory will keep them alive in the title race. A draw would eliminate both sides immediately.

Mumbai City arrive with the experience of handling high-pressure situations. Under head coach Petr Kratky, the Islanders have once again built a disciplined and resilient unit capable of grinding out crucial results late in the season. The Islanders’ attack has largely revolved around the brilliance of Lallianzuala Chhangte, whose movement inside the box and surprising aerial threat have made him one of the league’s standout players this season. Brandon Fernandes has also hit top form at the perfect time, while Zothanpuia continues to play a key role in midfield balance.

Kratky made it clear his side understands the scale of the challenge.

“We know what’s at stake, we need to win and we have to prepare accordingly,” the Mumbai City coach said ahead of the match. “It’s the last one. The winner takes all basically. We just have to fight. Nothing can be left on the pitch.”

Punjab FC’s Fairytale Run Continues

If Mumbai City represent established pedigree, Punjab FC represent the surprise story of the season. Very few expected Panagiotis Dilmperis’ side to enter the final day with a genuine title chance. Yet through organisation, aggressive pressing, and belief, Punjab have emerged as one of the league’s most consistent teams. At the centre of their rise has been Nsungusi Effiong.

After barely featuring last season and failing to score, the striker has transformed completely this year, contributing seven goals and two assists in 12 appearances. His partnership with creative midfielder Dani Ramírez and winger Ninthoinganba Meetei has powered Punjab into contention.

Dilmperis, however, insisted his team remains focused on performance rather than permutations. “Last day, a lot of teams, a lot of possibilities,” he said. “We try to approach this game like all the others. I think that pushes the pressure away from the team.”

The Greek coach also acknowledged the demanding expectations surrounding the club. “When I signed in this club, I knew how demanding this club is. We cannot be happy finishing in second position.”

Further east, Jamshedpur FC enter the final day with the narrowest route to the title but still a realistic one. Currently sixth with 21 points, Owen Coyle’s side must first defeat Odisha FC and then rely on multiple other results going their way.

For Jamshedpur to become champions they must beat Odisha FC, both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan must lose & Punjab FC and Mumbai City FC must draw. Even then, goal difference complications remain possible depending on scorelines elsewhere.

Despite the difficult equation, Coyle remains focused on the immediate task. “Our focus is on winning the game,” the Scotsman said. “That’s what we need to do.”

The Men of Steel will once again rely heavily on their aggressive mentality against top sides, something defender Stephen Eze highlighted confidently. “We never play defensive. We play every game to win,” Eze stated. “We’re the only team to beat East Bengal this season. We beat them on merit.”

Odisha FC may sit near the bottom of the table, but they could still shape the championship outcome. Head coach T.G. Purushothaman insisted his side remains fully motivated despite a disappointing campaign.

“We are ready to fight for this,” he said. “We have to achieve something for the club and for the fans.”

Odisha will attempt to use quick counter-attacking football through players like Suhair VP and Kartik Hantal against a Jamshedpur side expected to push aggressively for goals.

The beauty of the ISL title race lies in how fragile every scenario remains. One late goal in Kolkata could suddenly transform the significance of another goal in Delhi or Jamshedpur. One red card, one penalty, or one mistake may completely reshape the standings within minutes.

The final-day table currently reflects just how tight the race has become:

  • East Bengal – 23 points

  • Mohun Bagan – 23 points

  • Bengaluru FC – 23 points

  • Punjab FC – 22 points

  • Mumbai City FC – 22 points

  • Jamshedpur FC – 21 points

After months of competition, the ISL 2025-26 season now comes down to one final evening where pressure, ambition, and chaos will collide simultaneously across India. And somewhere before the night ends, a new champion or perhaps a familiar one will finally emerge.
