East Bengal FC and Punjab FC shared points in a tightly contested 0-0 draw in the Indian Super League 2025-26 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday.

While the scoreline remained blank, the contest delivered intensity, structure, and multiple scoring opportunities across both halves. The result keeps East Bengal at the top of the table with 22 points from 11 matches, while Punjab FC move up to sixth with 19 points from the same number of games. Goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill was named Player of the Match for his decisive interventions throughout the contest.

Punjab FC began with intent, pressing high and moving the ball quickly through midfield. Captain Dani Ramírez played a central role in dictating tempo, linking play and attempting to stretch East Bengal’s defensive shape. The visitors came close early when Ramírez tested the goalkeeper with a long-range effort that skimmed the near post. Manglenthang Kipgen added mobility in the final third, making runs that forced East Bengal’s backline to stay alert.

Despite Punjab’s positive start, East Bengal gradually settled, focusing on width and controlled build-up through Bipin Singh and PV Vishnu.

As the game progressed, both teams found phases of control but struggled to convert possession into clear chances. Punjab’s defensive unit, led by Bijoy V and supported by Khaiminthang Lhungdim, maintained compact spacing, limiting East Bengal’s ability to penetrate centrally. The hosts’ best opportunity of the first half came in the 30th minute. Miguel Figueira’s well-timed through ball released Bipin Singh behind the defence, but Arshdeep Singh reacted quickly, rushing off his line to block the attempt and preserve the deadlock.

At the other end, Punjab continued to rely on long-range efforts. Kipgen and Ramírez both tested Gill, but the goalkeeper remained composed, ensuring the first half ended without goals.

The second half opened with greater urgency, particularly from Punjab FC. The visitors created a series of chances within a short span, forcing multiple saves from Gill. One of the key moments came in the 53rd minute when Shami Singamayum connected with a cross from Lhungdim. His diving header was directed towards goal, but Gill produced a strong save to tip the ball away.

Ramírez continued to influence play, delivering dangerous balls into the penalty area, but East Bengal’s central defensive pairing of Kevin Sibille and Anwar Ali held their shape and dealt effectively with crosses.

After absorbing pressure, East Bengal regained control in phases, slowing the tempo and attempting to build structured attacks. Their most significant chance came in the 75th minute when Figueira struck a curling effort from the edge of the box. The shot beat the goalkeeper but struck the far post, denying the hosts the lead. Substitute Anton Søjberg later found space during a transition phase, but once again Arshdeep’s quick positioning prevented a clear scoring opportunity.

Punjab’s defensive organisation remained consistent, with Pablo Renan dos Santos making a crucial clearance to deny East Bengal from a dangerous delivery into the box.

Late Drama Without a Breakthrough

The closing minutes saw both teams push cautiously, aware of the risk of conceding late. The most dramatic moment came in the 90th minute when Mohamad Basim Rashid attempted an audacious effort from near the halfway line.

Spotting Arshdeep off his line, Rashid struck a dipping shot that beat the goalkeeper but hit the crossbar. The rebound led to another attacking sequence, with Figueira heading narrowly wide. Despite the late pressure, neither side could find the decisive goal, and the match concluded in a stalemate.

For East Bengal, the result extends their unbeaten run and keeps them at the top of the standings, but it also highlights missed opportunities in front of goal. Their ability to control phases of the game remains a strength, though converting chances will be a focus area moving forward. Punjab FC, meanwhile, will take confidence from their structured performance. The team showed discipline in defence and created enough chances to challenge the hosts, indicating progress in their overall game management.

While the match ended without goals, it offered a detailed tactical contest with both teams demonstrating organisation and intent. Goalkeeping performances, defensive discipline, and near misses defined the game, making it a competitive encounter despite the scoreline.

Both sides remain firmly in contention in the league standings, and this result adds another layer to what is shaping up to be a closely fought Indian Super League season.
