NorthEast United FC delivered one of their most complete performances of the Indian Super League 2025–26 season, defeating Chennaiyin FC 4-1 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.
A dominant display, headlined by a brace from Jairo Samperio, ensured the Highlanders secured all three points in emphatic fashion. The result lifts NorthEast United to ninth in the standings with 13 points from 12 matches, while Chennaiyin FC remain in 13th place with nine points, continuing to hover dangerously close to the relegation zone.
From the outset, NorthEast set the tone with intensity and purpose. The hosts earned early corners and pressed aggressively, forcing Chennaiyin onto the back foot. Their proactive approach paid off within five minutes, as a well-constructed move resulted in the opening goal. Goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh initiated the attack with a composed pass from the back, allowing NorthEast to transition quickly through midfield. Jithin MS delivered a precise cross into the penalty area, where Jairo Samperio showed composure to guide the ball into the net. The early breakthrough provided the Highlanders with both momentum and control.
NorthEast continued to look the more dangerous side, combining direct attacking play with structured build-up. Midfielders Tondonba Singh and Thoi Singh Huidrom attempted efforts from distance, keeping Chennaiyin’s defence alert. Meanwhile, the visitors struggled to convert their possession into meaningful chances. Chennaiyin did enjoy spells of control in midfield, but their attacking play lacked penetration. Daniel Chima Chukwu came closest for the visitors in the first half, only to be denied by a well-positioned Gurmeet Singh. Despite their efforts, clear-cut opportunities remained limited.
At the other end, NorthEast maintained their attacking threat. Jairo and Andy Rodríguez both forced saves from goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz, highlighting the hosts’ ability to create chances from different areas of the pitch.
The turning point of the half came in stoppage time. A defensive lapse from Mandar Rao Dessai allowed Jairo to capitalise on a loose ball inside the box. The Spaniard finished clinically into the far corner, doubling NorthEast’s lead just before the break. The goal not only extended the advantage but also underlined Chennaiyin’s defensive vulnerabilities. Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Chennaiyin emerged in the second half with renewed urgency. Lalrinliana Hnamte and Farukh Choudhary injected energy into midfield, helping the visitors push higher up the pitch. Around the hour mark, Chennaiyin created a series of chances, but Gurmeet Singh once again proved decisive.
The NorthEast goalkeeper made crucial saves to deny both Daniel Chima and Irfan Yadwad, preserving his side’s lead during a period of sustained pressure. His performance was instrumental in ensuring that Chennaiyin’s momentum did not translate into goals. As the game opened up, NorthEast capitalised with clinical efficiency. In the 70th minute, a well-worked attacking move involving Macarton Nickson and Jithin MS led to a dangerous cutback into the box. Chennaiyin defender Laldinliana R, attempting to intercept, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, making it 3-0.
The goal effectively shifted the match beyond Chennaiyin’s reach, though the visitors did manage a response. In the 81st minute, Laldinliana redeemed himself with a composed finish following a smart build-up involving Alberto Noguera. The goal provided a brief glimmer of hope, but it proved to be too little, too late. NorthEast quickly reasserted control and continued to press forward. Their fourth goal came in the 90th minute, capitalising on a goalkeeping error. Substitute Lalbiakdika struck a powerful shot at the near post, which Nawaz failed to handle cleanly, allowing the ball to slip into the net.
The goal sealed a comprehensive 4-1 victory and highlighted NorthEast’s ability to punish mistakes. Notably, all four goal contributions for the hosts came from players scoring their first goals of the ISL season, reflecting both squad depth and emerging confidence within the team. From a tactical standpoint, NorthEast’s performance was built on quick transitions, effective use of width, and clinical finishing. Their ability to convert chances at key moments, combined with disciplined defending during Chennaiyin’s attacking phases, proved decisive.
For Chennaiyin FC, the result exposes recurring issues. While they showed intent and created opportunities, their inability to finish chances and defensive lapses at crucial moments cost them heavily. The team now faces increasing pressure as the season progresses, particularly with relegation concerns looming. NorthEast United, on the other hand, will take confidence from this result. The win not only strengthens their position in the standings but also demonstrates their potential when executing their game plan effectively.
In Guwahati, the Highlanders delivered a performance defined by precision, control, and attacking clarity qualities that could prove vital as they look to build momentum in the final stages of the campaign.
