India’s leading men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty endured another disappointing outing at the All England Open as they suffered a surprise first-round defeat at the 2026 edition in Birmingham.

The fourth-seeded Indian duo were beaten 21–23, 12–21 by Malaysia’s young pair Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing, the 2024 World Junior Champions, bringing an abrupt end to India’s biggest medal hopes in the men’s doubles category.

For Satwik and Chirag, the defeat continues a puzzling trend at one of badminton’s most prestigious tournaments — a stage where the pair has repeatedly struggled to produce their best despite their global success in recent years.

A Match That Slipped Away

The contest began promisingly for the Indian pair, who looked in control during the opening phase of the first game. Using their familiar attacking approach, Satwik dominated from the back court while Chirag controlled the net exchanges, helping the Indians build an 11–6 lead at the mid-game interval.

Their aggressive start seemed to put the Malaysians under immediate pressure.

However, Tai and Kang gradually settled into the match. The young Malaysian duo began to accelerate the pace of rallies, forcing the Indians into flatter exchanges that neutralised Satwik’s powerful smashes. As the rallies became faster and more parallel across the court, the Malaysians started gaining confidence.

Despite leading for much of the opening game including holding a 16–15 advantage Satwik and Chirag failed to close out crucial points in the latter stages. The Malaysians saved multiple opportunities before eventually stealing the game 23–21, a psychological blow that shifted the momentum entirely.

Malaysians Take Control

Having survived the opening game, the Malaysian pair carried that momentum into the second. Tai and Kang displayed remarkable composure for a young partnership, dictating the pace of the rallies and targeting gaps in the Indian defence. Their quick reflexes at the net and sharp drives began to consistently trouble Satwik and Chirag.

The Indian duo, known for their aggressive attacking style, struggled to regain rhythm as errors began creeping into their game. Once the Malaysians established an early lead, they never looked back.

With the Indians chasing the scoreline, Tai and Kang capitalised on the pressure and closed the second game 21–12, completing a straight-game victory that stands among the biggest wins of their young careers.

A Rising Malaysian Pair

For Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing, the victory represents a significant milestone. The pair rose to prominence after winning the 2024 BWF World Junior Championships, establishing themselves as one of the most exciting young partnerships in world badminton.

Their performances on the senior circuit have steadily improved since then. Late in 2025, they captured titles at the Syed Modi International and the Guwahati Masters, signalling their readiness to challenge established pairs. The win over the world No. 4 Indian duo at the All England Open further confirms their potential as a rising force in men’s doubles.

Their tactical maturity was particularly impressive. Rather than getting drawn into long defensive rallies against Satwik’s powerful smashes, the Malaysians chose to accelerate the pace with flat drives and quick interceptions — a strategy that proved highly effective.

The All England Puzzle for Satwik-Chirag

For Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the defeat continues a frustrating pattern at the All England Championships. Despite being one of the most successful Indian men’s doubles pairs in history including reaching the world No. 1 ranking, winning Asian Games gold, and claiming multiple BWF titles the All England Open has remained an elusive tournament for them.

Their best performance at the event came in 2022, when they reached the quarterfinals. Since then, the pair has repeatedly fallen short of expectations in Birmingham, exiting earlier than their rankings and form would suggest.

The 2026 defeat is particularly disappointing considering their status as fourth seeds and one of the tournament’s major contenders.

Several factors contributed to the defeat. The most significant was the inability of the Indians to adapt once the Malaysians changed the tempo of the match. Tai and Kang’s flat, fast exchanges disrupted Satwik’s rhythm and reduced the effectiveness of the Indian pair’s attack-heavy style.

Another challenge was the closing stages of the first game. Leading for large parts of the opener, Satwik and Chirag had opportunities to seal the game but failed to convert key points. Losing the opening game after such a promising start seemed to affect their confidence.

Once the Malaysians gained momentum, the Indian pair struggled to regain control.

The early exit comes at a time when Indian badminton has been seeking strong results at the All England Open. Historically, the tournament has held special significance for Indian players. Pullela Gopichand famously won the title in 2001, while Prakash Padukone had earlier claimed the crown in 1980. However, in recent years, Indian doubles pairs have found it difficult to replicate similar success at the tournament.

Satwik and Chirag’s defeat means India’s hopes in the men’s doubles category have ended earlier than expected. While the All England Open continues to be a challenging tournament for the pair, Satwik and Chirag remain among the world’s most formidable men’s doubles teams.

Their track record across other major tournaments including the Asian Games, World Tour events, and BWF championships demonstrates their ability to compete at the highest level. The loss in Birmingham will undoubtedly be a setback, but it also offers an opportunity for reflection ahead of the upcoming tournaments in the BWF calendar.

For now, however, the All England Open remains an unfinished chapter in the otherwise remarkable journey of India’s most successful men’s doubles partnership.
