Aizawl FC produced one of the most remarkable turnarounds of the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025–26 season, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat Chanmari FC 3-2 in a pulsating Mizo Derby at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on Tuesday.

In a contest that ebbed and flowed dramatically, the People’s Club showcased resilience, tactical adjustments, and clinical finishing in the second half to snatch all three points.

The result temporarily lifted Aizawl FC to second place in the standings with eight points from five matches, while Chanmari FC were left ruing missed opportunities as they remained seventh with five points. Substitute Laldawngzuala emerged as the defining figure of the match, scoring a decisive brace and earning the Player of the Match award.

Chanmari seize early control

The derby began with Chanmari FC asserting themselves aggressively, pressing high and forcing Aizawl onto the back foot. Their intent was clear—stretch the defence, exploit spaces out wide, and capitalise on early momentum. This approach paid dividends in the 19th minute, albeit with a slice of fortune.

Malsawmsanga Renthlei attempted a lofted delivery into the box, seemingly harmless, but Aizawl goalkeeper Vanlalhriatpuia misjudged the flight. The ball slipped through his hands and into the net, gifting Chanmari an unexpected lead and energising the home crowd.

Aizawl gradually began to regain composure as the half progressed. Their midfield started to find rhythm, pushing higher up the pitch and attempting to link play between the lines. However, Chanmari remained compact defensively, denying clear-cut opportunities and maintaining control of the game’s tempo.

Just before the interval, Chanmari doubled their advantage. Aron Vanlalrinchhana made a sharp run into the penalty area and was brought down by Rohmingthanga, leaving the referee with little hesitation in pointing to the spot. Jota stepped up and calmly converted, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 2-0.

At halftime, Chanmari appeared firmly in control, both tactically and psychologically.

Aizawl’s turning point

The complexion of the match changed rapidly after the restart. Aizawl emerged with greater urgency, pressing higher and committing more players forward. Their breakthrough came in the 51st minute following a chaotic sequence inside the Chanmari penalty area.

A poorly dealt corner created panic, with the goalkeeper missing multiple attempts to clear. Despite two goal-line blocks, Chanmari failed to fully clear their lines. The loose ball eventually fell to Vincent Lalduhawma, who showed composure amid the scramble to slot home and reduce the deficit.

That goal proved to be the catalyst Aizawl needed. Momentum shifted decisively, and belief surged through the side. The introduction of Laldawngzuala proved to be a masterstroke from head coach R. Lalruatfela. Within a span of three minutes around the hour mark, the substitute completely transformed the contest.

First, he rose above the defence to power in a header from a well-delivered corner by Laltlanzova, bringing Aizawl level at 2-2. The goal exposed Chanmari’s vulnerability in defending set-pieces, an issue that would cost them again moments later.

Soon after, another dangerous delivery this time from a free-kick caused confusion in the Chanmari box. The goalkeeper hesitated, caught in no man’s land, allowing an unmarked Laldawngzuala to guide the ball into an empty net and complete a stunning turnaround.

In the space of a few minutes, Aizawl had gone from chasing the game to leading it, underlining the fine margins that often define derby encounters.

Stunned by the sudden shift in momentum, Chanmari responded with urgency. They pushed forward aggressively, particularly exploiting the right flank through Lalruatdika, whose crosses created moments of danger. Set-pieces also became a key avenue, with Christopher Kamei delivering threatening balls into the box.

However, despite sustained pressure, Chanmari struggled with composure in the final third. Lalruatsanga and C. Lalmuanpuia both missed opportunities to equalise, failing to convert promising chances.

The closest they came was in stoppage time when Ruatsanga forced an acrobatic save from Vanlalhriatpuia, who redeemed his earlier error with a crucial intervention to preserve Aizawl’s lead.

Tactical reflections

Aizawl’s comeback was built on improved intensity, better use of width, and capitalising on set-piece situations. Their ability to maintain pressure after pulling a goal back was key, as was the impact of substitutions that altered the game’s dynamics. For Chanmari, the defeat will be difficult to process. After executing their game plan effectively in the first half, defensive lapses and a loss of concentration proved costly.

Their inability to manage transitions and defend set-pieces ultimately undermined an otherwise strong performance.

Derbies often hinge on moments rather than sustained dominance, and this encounter was a perfect example. Chanmari controlled large portions of the game, but Aizawl’s clinical response in a decisive spell turned the match on its head.

For Aizawl FC, this victory could prove to be a turning point in their campaign, not just for the points gained but for the confidence it injects into the squad. For Chanmari FC, it is a reminder of the unforgiving nature of football—where control can evaporate in minutes.

In the end, the Mizo Derby delivered drama, intensity, and a comeback that will be remembered as one of the standout matches of the season.
