In a significant endorsement of its growing technical ecosystem, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has been awarded the prestigious Triple-A Certificate by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
The recognition, announced at the AFC Technical Summit on March 19, 2026, highlights the progress India has made in building a structured and modern football development framework.
The certification is part of the AFC’s Triple-A framework Analysis, Advice, and Accreditation a comprehensive evaluation mechanism designed to assess and enhance the technical capabilities of Member Associations. India was among just 12 AFC nations shortlisted for this rigorous process, underlining the importance of the achievement within the continental football landscape.
A Validation of Technical Progress
The Triple-A certification reflects a detailed assessment of AIFF’s technical programmes, spanning key areas such as coach education, grassroots development, youth pathways, women’s football, national team structures, domestic competitions, and futsal.
At the Technical Summit, AIFF presented its developmental blueprint and implementation strategies to AFC’s technical panel, led by Technical Director Andy Roxburgh. Following a thorough review and consultation process, the federation was awarded the certification, signifying its alignment with AFC’s evolving technical standards.

For Indian football, this recognition is not merely symbolic it is a validation of sustained efforts to professionalise and modernise its footballing structure over the past decade.
Coaching Pathways Get Global Recognition
One of the most impactful aspects of the Triple-A framework is its integration with UEFA’s coaching education pathways. Through AFC’s collaboration with UEFA, coaching licenses issued under AFC systems will now gain recognition across UEFA Member Associations. This development is particularly significant for Indian coaches. It opens pathways for greater international mobility, exposure, and professional growth an area where Indian football has historically faced limitations.
AIFF’s Head of Coach Education, Vivek Nagul, emphasised the importance of this milestone, describing it as a “momentous recognition” of the federation’s collective efforts. He highlighted that the certification is not just an achievement, but also a motivator to further strengthen the foundation of football development in the country.
Grassroots to Elite: A Holistic Framework
A key strength of AIFF’s presentation lay in its holistic approach to development. The federation showcased progress across multiple tiers of the football pyramid from grassroots participation to elite national team structures.
Grassroots programmes have seen increased outreach, with structured initiatives aimed at identifying and nurturing talent from a young age. Simultaneously, youth development pathways have been refined to ensure a smoother transition from junior to senior levels.
In women’s football, growing investment and improved competitive structures have started to yield results, both in participation and performance. Meanwhile, domestic competitions have undergone restructuring to improve competitiveness and align more closely with international calendars.
Futsal, often an overlooked discipline, has also received attention, with structured efforts to build a sustainable ecosystem.

The Triple-A certification comes at a crucial time for Indian football. With increasing focus on long-term planning and international competitiveness, such recognition provides both credibility and direction. It also strengthens AIFF’s position within the Asian football ecosystem, enabling deeper collaboration with AFC through technical exchanges, expert consultations, and continuous programme evaluation.
The framework ensures that the certification is not a one-time achievement. Instead, it establishes an ongoing process of review and improvement, with AFC providing guidance and feedback to help Member Associations refine their systems.
While the certification marks progress, it also highlights the road ahead. Indian football continues to chase the standards set by Asia’s top footballing nations, particularly in areas such as high-performance training, talent identification, and competitive exposure.
The Triple-A framework provides a structured pathway to bridge this gap. By aligning with AFC and UEFA standards, AIFF can ensure that its programmes remain relevant, modern, and globally competitive. However, the real test will lie in implementation translating frameworks into tangible results on the pitch, across all levels of the game.
For Indian football stakeholders, the certification should be viewed as a milestone rather than a culmination. It acknowledges progress but also raises expectations. The focus now shifts to sustaining and building upon this foundation. Continued investment in coaching education, infrastructure, and competitive opportunities will be critical to maintaining momentum.
Equally important will be ensuring that the benefits of these systems reach players and coaches at the grassroots level, where the future of Indian football ultimately lies. The AFC Triple-A certification positions AIFF within a progressive framework of technical development, collaboration, and accountability. It signals that Indian football is moving in the right direction structured, data-driven, and aligned with global standards.
As the federation continues to refine its systems and expand its reach, this recognition could serve as a catalyst for the next phase of growth. For now, it stands as a significant achievement one that reflects both the work done so far and the potential that lies ahead for Indian football.
