The Indian senior women’s national team stands on the brink of a decisive moment as they prepare to face Chinese Taipei in their final Group C match of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026 on Tuesday, March 10, at the Western Sydney Stadium in Sydney.
With a place in the quarter-finals still within reach, the encounter has effectively become a virtual final for the Blue Tigresses.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 14:30 IST, will be streamed live on FanCode. For India, the equation is clear a convincing victory could keep their campaign alive in the continental tournament.
A Difficult Start to the Campaign
India enter the match having endured a challenging start to their tournament. The Blue Tigresses currently sit fourth in Group C with zero points after suffering defeats in their first two matches.
Their campaign began with a narrow 1–2 loss to Vietnam, where India showed flashes of promise but ultimately conceded a late goal that proved decisive. The second outing against Asian giants Japan proved even tougher, as the Nadeshiko inflicted a heavy 11–0 defeat, underlining the gulf between the sides. At the top of the group standings, Japan lead with six points from two matches, having already secured their place in the knockout stage.
Chinese Taipei and Vietnam, meanwhile, occupy second and third positions respectively with three points each. Despite the setbacks, India’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals are not yet extinguished.
The Qualification Equation
The Blue Tigresses must defeat Chinese Taipei by at least two goals to realistically keep their quarter-final chances alive. Their fate will also depend on the outcome of the simultaneous match between Japan and Vietnam. If Japan defeat Vietnam and India secure a two-goal victory over Chinese Taipei, the Indian side could finish second in the group and progress to the knockout stage.
The tournament format allows the top two teams from each of the three groups, along with the two best third-placed teams, to advance to the quarter-finals. This structure means that goal difference and margin of victory could play a crucial role in determining the final standings.

India head coach Amelia Valverde acknowledged that the team must quickly move past their earlier results and focus entirely on the task ahead.
“The two matches against Vietnam and Japan were very different,” Valverde said ahead of the decisive clash. “The first thing we have to do is turn the page as quickly as possible. We need to prepare well for this match and focus on what lies ahead.”

For the Spanish coach, the upcoming encounter represents a defining moment in India’s campaign.
“We are aware of the importance of the match. It is like a final for us,” she explained. “The players have been working very hard for many months with the aim of creating history for their country. Now we have a clear opportunity to qualify, and we must approach it with the seriousness it deserves.”
Valverde emphasised that India’s success will depend on reproducing the positive elements of their performance against Vietnam, particularly in the second half. “If we reproduce the version of football we showed in the second half of the first match, we will be very close to achieving success,” she added.
Tactical Challenge Against Chinese Taipei
While India must chase a result, Valverde is well aware that Chinese Taipei present a disciplined and organised opponent.
“They are well organised in their style of play,” she noted. “They had a strong defensive phase in their first match and played a very intelligent game against Japan.”
To overcome that defensive solidity, the Indian coach believes her team must play with greater intensity and attacking intent.
“We need to bring intensity and be a team that wants the ball. We have to move forward and create attacking opportunities. That is one of our advantages, considering the abilities of our players.”
Players Ready for the Moment
Indian midfielder Shilky Devi Hemam echoed the coach’s sentiments, stressing that the squad has already put the Japan defeat behind them. “We have learned our lessons from the last game,” Shilky said. “This will be a special match for us. It’s a great opportunity, and we have to make the most of it.”
The Blue Tigresses will likely rely heavily on forward Manisha Kalyan, whose pace and attacking ability remain one of India’s most potent weapons.
Chinese Taipei Eye Progression
For Chinese Taipei, the scenario is comparatively straightforward. A draw would be enough to secure their progression to the quarter-finals. However, head coach Prasobchoke Chokemor has urged his players to approach the match with the intention of winning rather than settling for a cautious result.

“The team are more confident after bouncing back in the last match,” Chokemor said. “But I must make sure they do not become overconfident.” “Even though a draw may be enough, we will go onto the pitch to win the match and not worry about other results.”
Chokemor also acknowledged India’s attacking threat, particularly the danger posed by Manisha Kalyan. “We know India well. I watched them during the qualifiers in Thailand and they are a very good team,” he said. “Manisha Kalyan has tremendous speed, and we will be very focused on containing her.”
For India, Tuesday’s clash represents far more than just another group match. It is an opportunity to redeem themselves after a difficult start and potentially secure a historic quarter-final berth.
With qualification hanging in the balance, the Blue Tigresses will step onto the field knowing that only a strong performance and a decisive victory can keep their Asian Cup dream alive.
