India produced a strong response under pressure to defeat New Zealand 2-0 in their second tie of the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I campaign at the DLTA Complex in New Delhi on April 8, 2026.
Led by composed performances from Vaishnavi Adkar and Sahaja Yamalapalli in the singles rubbers, the hosts bounced back effectively after a disappointing opening-day loss to Thailand.
The result keeps India firmly in contention in a tightly contested round-robin format, where consistency across ties is critical. With only the top two teams advancing, every match carries significant weight, and India’s ability to recover quickly highlights both the depth and resilience within the squad.
Adkar sets the tone with authority
All eyes were on 21-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar, who had made her Billie Jean King Cup debut just a day earlier. Facing New Zealand’s Aishi Das, Adkar showed no signs of nerves or lingering effects from her previous outing. Instead, she delivered a mature and controlled performance, dictating play from the baseline and managing key moments effectively.
Adkar made an immediate impact, breaking serve early to take a 2-0 lead in the opening set. Her ability to absorb pressure and transition into attack proved decisive, as she secured another break in the fifth game. From there, she maintained control, closing out the set 6-2 with minimal resistance.

The second set offered a slightly stiffer challenge. Das showed improved resistance, matching Adkar game-for-game to level the set at 4-4. However, the Indian once again demonstrated composure under pressure, stepping up her aggression at the right moment. A crucial break of serve tilted the balance, and Adkar held firm to complete a 6-2, 6-4 victory in one hour and 30 minutes.
It was a performance built on clarity and discipline qualities that will be vital as the tournament progresses.
Yamalapalli seals the tie in dominant fashion
If Adkar provided the foundation, Sahaja Yamalapalli ensured there were no complications in sealing the tie. Taking on Valentina Ivanov in the second singles rubber, Yamalapalli delivered one of India’s most commanding performances of the tournament so far.
From the outset, she imposed herself on the match, breaking Ivanov’s serve three times in the opening set to race to a 6-1 lead. Her aggressive baseline play, combined with consistent depth and placement, kept her opponent under constant pressure.
The second set followed a similar pattern. Yamalapalli continued to dictate rallies, forcing Ivanov onto the defensive and limiting her ability to construct points. With clean hitting and tactical clarity, the Indian closed out the match 6-3, sealing the tie for India in straight sets.
Her performance underlined India’s growing strength in singles, particularly in terms of controlling tempo and executing game plans against varied opposition.
Doubles to follow, but job already done
With India having secured the tie through the singles rubbers, the doubles match featuring Rutuja Bhosale and Ankita Raina against Monique Barry and Erin Routliffe was set to conclude proceedings. While the doubles result remained pending at the time of writing, the outcome of the tie had already been decided.
The ability to close ties early is a crucial advantage in a demanding schedule, allowing players to conserve energy and maintain rhythm across multiple match days.

Elsewhere in the competition, both Indonesia and the Korea Republic continued their strong starts, reinforcing their status as early frontrunners. Korea Republic registered a clinical 2-0 win over Thailand, with Daehyon Back and Sohyun Park delivering in the singles rubbers. Their performances highlighted consistency and efficiency traits that are often decisive in round-robin formats.
Indonesia, meanwhile, produced one of the most dominant displays of the tournament, sweeping Mongolia 3-0 without dropping a single game across all matches. Aldila Sutjiadi set the tone with a double bagel (6-0, 6-0) victory, before Anjali Kirana Junarto secured the tie with another convincing singles win. The Indonesian pair then combined in the doubles to complete a flawless outing.
Such performances not only strengthen their position in the standings but also send a clear message to the rest of the field.
India’s campaign back on track
For India, this victory represents more than just a win it is a reset. After a challenging start against Thailand, the team has shown the ability to regroup quickly and execute under pressure. The performances of Adkar and Yamalapalli are particularly encouraging. Both players demonstrated tactical awareness, mental composure, and the ability to handle momentum shifts key attributes at this level of competition.
With more ties to come in the round-robin stage, India will need to build on this momentum. The margins are fine, and consistency across matches will determine qualification.
For now, however, the hosts have responded in the best possible way by delivering on court when it mattered most.
