The return of the Professional Wrestling League (PWL) earlier this year is already yielding measurable impact on the international stage, with athletes from Season 5 playing a central role in India’s medal-winning performances across major competitions.

The correlation is particularly evident at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships, where PWL-affiliated wrestlers contributed 11 of India’s 17 medals, underlining the league’s growing significance in the country’s high-performance wrestling ecosystem.

Held at the Noida Indoor Stadium in January, PWL Season 5 marked a high-profile comeback after a prolonged gap. The competition brought together elite international wrestlers and India’s top domestic talent in a structured, high-intensity format. The post-league results now suggest that the tournament provided not just exposure, but a competitive edge that has translated into consistent performances at the global level.

Sujeet Kalkal’s Rise to the Top

Among the standout performers, Sujeet Kalkal has emerged as a central figure in India’s wrestling resurgence. Competing in the men’s 65kg category, Sujeet has rapidly climbed to World No. 2, positioned just behind Iran’s Rahman Amouzad, a reigning world champion and Olympic silver medallist.

Sujeet’s campaign in PWL Season 5 was a precursor to his current form. Representing Delhi Dangal Warriors, he won six of his seven bouts and finished runner-up, demonstrating both consistency and tactical maturity. Since then, he has built on that momentum with three consecutive international gold medals.

Victories at the Ranking Series events in Zagreb and Muhamet Malo were followed by a commanding performance at the Asian Championships in Bishkek, where he secured gold. His ability to sustain peak performance across multiple tournaments highlights not only physical preparedness but also improved match management and adaptability.

In the women’s 53kg category, Meenakshi Goyat has been another major beneficiary of the PWL platform. Representing Punjab Royals during Season 5, she maintained an unbeaten record in the league, winning all three of her bouts.

Her progression since then has been equally impressive. A crucial victory over Antim Panghal in the national trials secured her a place in the Indian team, marking a turning point in her career. Meenakshi followed this up with silver medals at both the Muhamet Malo tournament and the Asian Championships in Bishkek.

Her performances reflect a combination of technical improvement and increased confidence, particularly in high-pressure bouts against established international opponents.

Consistent Contributions Across Weight Categories

India’s medal tally at the Asian Championships was bolstered by multiple PWL athletes delivering consistent results across categories.

Olympic silver medallist Aman Sehrawat, competing in the men’s 61kg division, secured silver medals at both Zagreb and Bishkek. Representing Tigers of Mumbai Dangals in PWL, Aman has continued to demonstrate his ability to compete at the highest level, maintaining consistency across tournaments. In the heavyweight category (125kg), Dinesh Dhankhad of Punjab Royals added bronze medals in both events, reinforcing India’s presence in weight classes that have traditionally been competitive at the continental level.

Neha Sangwan, representing Haryana Thunders, also contributed with a silver medal at Muhamet Malo and a bronze at the Asian Championships, showcasing depth in the women’s categories.

Abhimanyou’s Breakthrough Moment

One of the most significant individual performances came from Abhimanyou in the men’s 70kg category. The 24-year-old CISF constable, who competed for UP Dominators in PWL Season 5, delivered a breakthrough performance in Bishkek. He clinched gold by defeating Mongolia’s Tömör-Ochiryn Tulga, a former Asian Games champion and multiple world medallist. The victory not only marked a career milestone for Abhimanyou but also highlighted the emergence of new talent capable of challenging established names on the international stage.

The influence of PWL Season 5 has extended beyond Indian wrestlers, with several international participants also continuing their strong form. Canada’s Karla Godinez Gonzalez, who represented Delhi Dangal Warriors, secured a silver medal in Zagreb, while Japan’s Yui Susaki part of the title-winning Haryana Thunders squad added another Asian title to her already decorated career.

These performances reinforce the league’s credibility as a global platform where elite wrestlers can compete and maintain peak competitive sharpness.

The results following Season 5 underline the importance of structured domestic competitions in preparing athletes for international success. The PWL format, which combines team-based competition with individual performance metrics, provides wrestlers with high-intensity match exposure in a controlled environment. For Indian wrestlers, competing against international opponents within the league helps bridge the gap between domestic and global standards. It also enables technical refinement, tactical experimentation, and psychological conditioning all critical components of elite performance.

With the Asian Games and World Championships scheduled later this year, the current trajectory of PWL athletes provides a strong foundation for India’s medal prospects. The consistency shown by key wrestlers across multiple tournaments suggests improved depth and readiness within the squad. However, sustaining this momentum will require continued focus on preparation, recovery, and strategic competition planning. The ability to peak at major events remains the ultimate test for these athletes.

The impact of PWL Season 5 is now clearly visible in India’s international wrestling results. With 11 of 17 medals at the Asian Championships coming from league participants, the connection between domestic competition and global success has been firmly established. As Indian wrestling continues to evolve, the Professional Wrestling League is positioning itself as a critical component of the high-performance pathway not just as a competition platform, but as a catalyst for sustained international excellence.
