India’s freestyle wrestling contingent delivered another strong statement at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2026, with Aman Sehrawat and Mukul Dahiya advancing to their respective finals and extending what has been a highly productive campaign for the country.

With five finalists across categories, this marks India’s best showing at the continental event since the 2020 edition, underlining the depth and upward trajectory in men’s freestyle wrestling.

Aman Sehrawat, India’s Paris Olympics bronze medallist, once again showcased his ability to deliver under pressure, edging past Iran’s Ahmad Mohammadnezhadjavan in a closely contested 61kg semifinal. The bout, which ended 11-9 in Aman’s favour, was a tactical and high-scoring affair that tested both wrestlers’ defensive awareness and counter-attacking skills.

Aman began aggressively, looking to dictate pace with quick attacks and sharp movement. However, the Iranian wrestler responded effectively, keeping the scores tight through well-timed counters and exposure points. The bout remained on a knife’s edge throughout, with momentum shifting multiple times. In the decisive moments, Aman’s composure and match awareness proved critical as he managed to hold on to his narrow lead and close out the contest.

The win not only secured him a place in the final but also reaffirmed his growing reputation as one of India’s most reliable performers on the big stage. He will now face North Korea’s Kim Kwang Myong in the gold medal bout—a matchup that promises to test Aman’s tactical discipline and endurance against a traditionally strong opponent.

In the 86kg category, Mukul Dahiya emerged as another standout performer, putting together a series of commanding displays en route to the final. Mukul’s semifinal victory over former Asian champion Bolat Sakayev of Kazakhstan was particularly impressive. Winning 12-6, Mukul controlled large phases of the bout with his attacking intent and ability to convert opportunities into points.

What stood out in Mukul’s performance was his clarity in approach. He maintained a high work rate, consistently pushing for points rather than sitting back on a lead. Against an experienced opponent like Sakayev, that proactive strategy paid dividends, allowing him to build and sustain a comfortable margin.

Earlier in the tournament, Mukul had made a strong statement in the quarterfinals, where he dismantled World Championships bronze medallist Khidir Saipudinov of Bahrain with a dominant 9-0 victory. That performance, marked by technical superiority, highlighted both his physical conditioning and tactical sharpness.

The progression from a one-sided quarterfinal to a controlled semifinal win reflects Mukul’s ability to adapt across bouts, an essential trait at this level of competition. He now faces a significantly tougher challenge in the final against Iran’s Kamran Ghasempour, a two-time world champion known for his strength, experience, and strategic discipline.

For Mukul, the final represents not just a shot at gold but also an opportunity to establish himself among the elite in the 86kg category. A win against a wrestler of Ghasempour’s calibre would mark a major milestone in his career.

India’s overall performance in freestyle wrestling at this edition has been noteworthy. Having five finalists indicates both depth and consistency across weight categories. It also reflects the effectiveness of the current development system, which is producing wrestlers capable of competing and succeeding against some of Asia’s strongest nations, including Iran, Kazakhstan, and Japan.

While Aman and Mukul will compete for gold, Dinesh in the 125kg category will have another opportunity to add to India’s medal tally as he prepares for the bronze medal match. Though he fell short of the final, reaching the medal round keeps India’s chances alive in yet another weight class.

The broader takeaway from this campaign is the emergence of a more balanced and competitive freestyle unit. Traditionally reliant on a handful of standout performers, India now appears to have a wider pool of wrestlers capable of making deep runs at major events.

The performances also come at an important phase in the international calendar, with teams beginning to build momentum towards future global competitions. Success at the Asian Championships not only boosts confidence but also provides crucial ranking points and exposure against top-tier opposition.

For now, the message is clear India’s freestyle wrestlers are not just competing; they are consistently placing themselves in contention for top honours on the continental stage.
