Shillong Lajong FC produced a clinical second-half display to secure a 2-0 victory over Namdhari FC in the Star Cement Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26 at the Namdhari Football Stadium in Ludhiana on Friday.
Two quickfire goals from Everbrightson Sana and Ephraim Lalremtluanga shortly after the restart proved decisive, as the visitors claimed three crucial points to consolidate their position in the top half of the table.
The win takes Shillong Lajong to 14 points from eight matches, strengthening their push in the upper half of the standings, while Namdhari remain eighth with seven points, continuing their struggle for consistency this season.
Both sides entered the fixture looking to bounce back from previous setbacks, and the opening exchanges reflected that urgency. However, the first half was largely scrappy, with neither team able to establish sustained rhythm. Namdhari, playing at home, looked to utilise their physical presence and direct approach, often relying on long balls and set-pieces to create openings. But their efforts were comfortably dealt with by a disciplined Shillong Lajong backline.
As the half progressed, Shillong Lajong began to assert greater control, particularly through the right flank where Phrangki Buam and full-back Kitboklang Khyriem combined effectively. Buam’s movement and delivery caused problems for the Namdhari defence, while Everbrightson Sana remained a constant aerial threat inside the box.

Shillong came close to breaking the deadlock before the interval when Sana’s glancing header forced a sharp save from goalkeeper Niraj Kumar. Buam also tested the keeper with a couple of attempts, but Namdhari managed to hold firm, ensuring the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
The contest, however, shifted dramatically in the early stages of the second half. Shillong Lajong executed their game plan with precision, capitalising on a moment of transition to open the scoring in the 53rd minute.
The move originated from a Namdhari set-piece, which was cleared effectively, allowing Shillong to launch a swift counter-attack. Buam was released into space and displayed excellent awareness to switch play to the left flank. Ephraim Lalremtluanga, who had been introduced into the starting lineup, showed composure to cushion the ball perfectly into the path of Sana. The striker made no mistake, unleashing a first-time right-footed volley that beat the goalkeeper and found the back of the net.

The goal injected confidence into the visitors, and they wasted no time in extending their advantage. Just four minutes later, Shillong doubled their lead, once again exploiting spaces in the Namdhari defence.
This time, Sana turned provider, delivering a looping cross into the penalty area. Ephraim timed his run to perfection, slipping between two defenders before guiding a well-placed header past Niraj Kumar. In the span of four minutes, Shillong had effectively taken control of the contest.
To their credit, Namdhari attempted to respond immediately. A promising cross from the right found Manvir Singh in a good position, but the forward failed to direct his effort on target, missing a crucial opportunity to pull one back and shift momentum.
Shillong, sensing control, continued to create chances. Buam remained influential, repeatedly finding pockets of space and driving forward, though his decision-making in the final third occasionally let him down as he opted to pass instead of taking shots himself. Despite these missed opportunities, the visitors maintained a firm grip on proceedings.
In the latter stages of the match, Shillong Lajong demonstrated tactical maturity, managing possession effectively and slowing the tempo when required. Their defensive structure remained compact, denying Namdhari any clear openings despite the home side’s attempts to push forward with direct balls and physical play.
Namdhari’s inability to convert possession into meaningful chances once again proved costly. While they showed intent, particularly in aerial duels and set-piece situations, the lack of cutting edge in the final third meant they rarely troubled the Shillong goalkeeper.
For Shillong Lajong, the victory marks an important response following their previous defeat. Head coach Birendra Thapa’s decision to make multiple changes to the starting lineup paid off, with Ephraim Lalremtluanga playing a pivotal role in the attacking phase, contributing a goal and an assist.
The result also highlights Shillong’s growing balance as a side capable of defending resolutely while also transitioning quickly into attack. Their ability to capitalise on key moments ultimately made the difference in a game that was otherwise evenly poised for large periods.
As the league progresses into a crucial phase, Shillong Lajong will take confidence from this performance, knowing that consistency in both boxes can keep them firmly in contention. Namdhari, meanwhile, will need to address their defensive lapses and improve efficiency in front of goal if they are to climb up the table in the coming fixtures.
