India’s women wrestlers continued their impressive showing at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2026, with Meenakshi powering into the final of the women’s 53kg category, while Hansika Lamba and Neha Sangwan secured bronze medals in their respective weight classes.
The results added further momentum to India’s campaign at the continental event in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Meenakshi, who has been one of India’s most promising young wrestlers in recent years, booked her place in the gold-medal bout after a composed 4-2 victory over Park Seoyong of South Korea in the semifinals. The Indian grappler demonstrated tactical maturity, controlling the bout in crucial moments and holding off her opponent’s late challenge to seal her place in the final.
Earlier in the day, Meenakshi had registered a dominant win in the quarterfinals, defeating Uzbekistan’s Sakibjamal Esbosynova 15-4. The 53kg wrestler, who earned her place in the Indian squad by defeating two-time World Championships bronze medallist Antim Panghal in the trials, has carried that form into the continental stage with confidence and precision.
She will now face China’s Jin Zhang, a former World Championships silver medallist, in the final. The bout promises to be a stern test of Meenakshi’s technical ability and mental resilience, as she looks to convert her strong run into gold.
India’s medal tally received a further boost with two bronze medals in the women’s freestyle events. In the 55kg category, Hansika Lamba staged an impressive performance to overcome Kyrgyzstan’s Aruuke Kadyrbek Kyzy 6-1. After a closely contested opening phase, Hansika shifted gears in the second half of the bout, executing well-timed takedowns to secure a decisive win.
The 19-year-old’s bronze marks a significant milestone in her young career, underlining her potential on the international stage. Competing with composure and discipline, Hansika showed the temperament required at this level, particularly in a pressure situation where a medal was at stake.
In the 59kg division, Neha Sangwan delivered a strong performance to clinch bronze, defeating Mongolia’s Bolortuya Khurelkhuu 10-4. Neha started cautiously but gradually asserted control, capitalising on openings to build a comfortable lead. Her aggressive approach in the latter stages proved decisive, ensuring India added another medal to its tally.

Elsewhere, Harshita (72kg) fell short in her semifinal bout but remains in contention for a bronze medal, with her bronze-medal match scheduled next. Her campaign so far has reflected determination, and she will aim to finish on the podium in her upcoming bout.
India’s presence remains strong across multiple categories, with Manisha (57kg), Mansi (62kg), and Monika (65kg) still in contention via the repechage rounds. Each will have an opportunity to fight their way back into medal contention, depending on their results in the repechage bouts.
