Peter Hartley is in line to be named as assistant coach of Kerala Blasters FC for the remaining games of the 2025-26 ISL season. Hartley will assist head coach Ashley Westwood.
Kerala Blasters FC’s higher-ups made the decision to replace David Catala in the middle of the season, as the team has looked below par in all departments. Kerala Blasters FC hasn’t won a single game so far in 7 matches and is ranked 13th in the points table, just above Mohammedan SC.
Ashley Westwood was appointed after David Catala was removed, and the team management is now looking to add a new member to the coaching staff in the form of Peter Hartley and transform the entire set up.
Peter Hartley has experience with ISL
Hartley has played in the league and knows the functionalities and operations of how the tournament is played. The 38-year-old Englishman previously played for Jamshedpur FC in the league and also for Inter Kashi in the lower division of the I League.
Jamshedpur FC won the 2021-22 ISL season under his captaincy and registered a record 7th win on the trot in that season. The team emerged as one of the most dominating teams in the league under his captaincy. Owen Coyle was the head coach of Jamshedpur FC during that time. Hartley left the club in 2023 and joined English club Hartlepool United.
The 38-year-old former centre back returned to India and joined Inter Kashi FC during the 2023-24 season when the club played in the I League. Hartley is vastly experienced when it comes to playing for Indian clubs, and his arrival as an assistant coach could be a big advantage for Kerala Blasters, who are going through a difficult phase despite possessing some of the finest players in the dugout. He was the manager of Scottish club St Mirren FC, also.
This could also be a new beginning for Hartley to establish himself as a mentor. Working for a team like Kerala Blasters FC would help him to grow in the future and gain vital experience by working under an experienced head coach, Ashley Westwood.
Experience of playing for different clubs
Hartley has played for Sunderland’s youth team during the early 2000s and later for its senior team in the English Premier League. The former centre back has also played for clubs like Chesterfield, Stevenage, Plymouth Argyle, Bristol Rovers, Blackpool , Motherwell, etc. in the EFL League.

Hartley has loads of experience playing in different English clubs, and playing in English conditions is probably the toughest for any player. It helps a player to develop physically, temperamentally and technically. This experience will surely be a big boost to refine Kerala Blasters FC as a much more competitive unit in all departments.
How will Hartley’s signing be beneficial for Kerala Blasters FC ?
It has undoubtedly been one of the most disappointing performances for Kerala FC in the history of the ISL. Fans have openly criticised the team management as well as the administrators. The team’s fan group, which is called the Manjappada group, expressed disappointment with the way the team has performed this season so far.
They want the team’s management as well as the administration to work in a coordinated manner, and want transparency at every level. The fans had expressed disappointment by writing messages on the banners during match days that highlighted the entire story on how there is severe mismanagement at every level. Hartley’s role will be crucial as a lot would be expected from him, especially in rebuilding the team. The team is currently in 13th position in the points table and is facing relegation.
Ashley Westwood and Peter Hartley’s first and foremost responsibility would be to instill confidence in the players that they can compete against the best. Both need to understand every player’s strengths and weaknesses and accordingly implement a game plan. Both need to lift the morale of the players in these difficult situations, as they are capable of handling such situations. They need to understand every player’s mindset and need to make every player understand his role.

They need to prepare players temperamentally and motivate them to play with the same energy and intensity that Kerala Blasters FC is known for. It might take some time, but considering the experience of both Ashley Westwood and Peter Hartley at this level, fans can expect better things from the duo in the future.
Currently, their main target is to save the team from relegation. Both know Indian Football closely at the domestic level, club level and also the Indian national team. Both are vastly experienced in tackling tough situations accordingly. Hopefully, the appointment of these two experienced pros could be the beginning of something special for the club.
