India’s para archers made a powerful statement on the qualification day of the Para World Archery Series, delivering a series of high-quality performances across categories.
Headlined by world champion Sheetal Devi and a consistent showing from Toman in the men’s compound section, India not only secured top individual rankings but also dominated the team standings.
With multiple archers finishing inside the top eight and all compound archers earning direct byes into the knockout stages, the qualification round set up a strong foundation for India heading into the elimination phase.
Sheetal Devi Sets the Benchmark
In the women’s compound category, Sheetal Devi once again demonstrated why she is among the most consistent performers in para archery. Topping the qualification round with an impressive score of 698, she established a clear gap over the field and reaffirmed her status as a medal contender.
Her round was marked by control and precision, maintaining a high scoring rate throughout. Finishing first not only boosts confidence but also ensures a favourable draw in the knockout rounds, where she will enter directly at an advanced stage.
India’s depth in the women’s compound category was equally evident. Payal Nag secured third place with a score of 678, while Jyoti (672) and Sarita (669) finished fifth and sixth respectively. Having four archers in the top six highlights the strength of India’s women’s squad and provides a significant advantage in team events.

Toman Leads Men’s Charge
In the men’s compound category, Toman delivered a composed performance to finish second with a score of 689, narrowly missing out on the top spot. His consistency across ends ensured he stayed in contention throughout the qualification round.
Close behind him, Shyam Sunder finished third with 686, while Rakesh matched that score to secure fifth place. Vivek rounded off a strong Indian presence in the top tier, finishing seventh with 684.
The clustering of Indian archers within the top eight is particularly significant in a competition of this level. It reflects not only individual quality but also the ability to maintain performance under pressure, a key factor in elimination rounds.

A major takeaway from the qualification results is that all Indian archers in both compound men and compound women categories secured byes into the knockout stages. This is a crucial advantage, allowing them to skip early elimination rounds and enter the competition at a later stage.
Byes not only reduce the number of matches an archer needs to win to reach the podium but also provide additional time for recovery, preparation, and strategic planning factors that can prove decisive in tightly contested knockout formats.
India’s dominance extended beyond individual performances into the team events. The country secured the number one ranking in compound men’s, compound women’s, and compound mixed team (CX) categories.
This clean sweep in team qualifications reflects strong collective performance and coordination. Heading into the elimination rounds as top seeds places India in a favourable position, with a clearer path towards medal rounds.
Wheelchair Category Adds to Momentum
In the wheelchair category, Swati added to India’s positive start by finishing third in the W1 women’s qualification. Her performance ensures a strong seeding going into the knockout stages and further strengthens India’s overall presence in the competition. While qualification rounds are about ranking and positioning, they also offer insight into form and rhythm. For India, the performances indicate a squad in control and capable of delivering across categories.
However, the nature of archery ensures that past scores offer no guarantees. Knockout rounds bring a reset, where each match is decided in isolation, often by the narrowest of margins.
India’s challenge will be to convert this strong qualification showing into podium finishes. Maintaining composure, handling pressure situations, and executing consistently in head-to-head matchups will be key.
The opening day of the Para World Archery Series has placed India in a commanding position. With Sheetal Devi leading the women’s field, Toman anchoring the men’s challenge, and strong depth across categories, the team has set high expectations for the knockout stages.
If the archers can carry forward this momentum and replicate their precision under elimination pressure, India will be well-placed to contend for multiple medals in what is shaping up to be a promising campaign.
