For India U20 goalkeeper Suraj Aheibam, confronting that reality became a turning point one that reshaped both his routine and his career trajectory.

In modern sport, marginal gains often define success. While training methods, nutrition, and recovery protocols are widely discussed, one factor that increasingly shapes an athlete’s performance is digital discipline.

Less than a year ago, Suraj found himself at a crossroads. On April 14, 2025, his side, Classic Football Academy, suffered a heavy 0-3 defeat to Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Reliance Foundation Development League final. The result was disappointing, but what followed proved far more significant.

That night, as he processed the loss, Suraj began reflecting inward. The issue, he realised, was not just about performance on the pitch it was about habits off it.

The Silent Disruption

Like many young athletes, Suraj had fallen into the trap of excessive social media use. What began as casual scrolling had gradually evolved into a disruptive routine. Hours spent watching reels after meals and late into the night began affecting his sleep, recovery, and focus.

“I had become a social media addict,” Suraj admitted. “I would watch reels after breakfast and lunch, and whenever I had free time. But the worst was after dinner. I would spend two to three hours just scrolling.”

The consequences were subtle but cumulative. Poor sleep led to fatigue. Fatigue affected training intensity. And over time, his overall performance began to dip.

Recognising the pattern was the first step. Acting on it required conviction.

Within hours of that defeat, Suraj made a decisive choice—he deleted his social media accounts entirely. It was a bold move in an era where digital presence is often seen as essential, especially for young athletes.

But for Suraj, it was about reclaiming control.

The immediate impact was profound. With distractions removed, he began restructuring his daily routine. Nights became shorter and more restful. Mornings felt sharper. Training sessions were approached with renewed focus.

He also began paying closer attention to recovery and diet two areas often overlooked when routines lack discipline. Gradually, the benefits started to show.

Performance Reflects Discipline

Just over a month later, on May 18, 2025, Suraj delivered one of the defining moments of his young career. In the SAFF U19 Championship final in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh, India were locked at 1-1 with Bangladesh after regulation time.

The match went into a penalty shootout a scenario that tests not just skill, but composure.

Suraj rose to the occasion. Reading the moment perfectly, he saved the decisive penalty, securing the title for India.

“It validated my decision,” he said. “When I stayed away from distractions, I felt calm and focused. During that penalty, I was completely in the moment.”

The save was more than just a match-winning act—it was proof that discipline off the field translates directly into performance on it.

A New Approach to Balance

After the tournament, Suraj reactivated his social media accounts, but with a transformed mindset. The relationship with digital platforms had changed—from dependency to controlled engagement.

“Now I’ve changed my habits,” he explained. “Instead of scrolling, I watch goalkeeping videos or listen to music before sleeping. I make sure I sleep by 10:30 pm.”

This shift highlights a key aspect of modern athlete management—not complete avoidance, but mindful usage. By replacing passive consumption with purposeful content, Suraj has found a balance that supports his development.

The transformation has coincided with significant milestones in his career. Suraj secured his first Indian Super League contract with Bengaluru FC, marking his transition into the professional setup.

He has also taken on a leadership role as captain of the India U20 team at the ongoing SAFF U20 Championship.

“I had a different mindset earlier,” he said. “Now, as a captain, I feel more responsible. I want to set an example and maintain discipline.”

Leadership, in this context, extends beyond on-field decisions. It involves setting standards—through behaviour, preparation, and consistency.

Influences and Mentorship

Suraj’s evolution has also been shaped by the people around him. Former India international Renedy Singh, who worked closely with him at Classic Football Academy and Bengaluru FC, has been a key mentor. “Renedy sir has done a lot for me,” Suraj shared. “He supported me, gave me advice, and always emphasised discipline.”

Such mentorship plays a critical role in bridging the gap between potential and performance. For young athletes, guidance from experienced professionals can accelerate growth and instil the right values.

Suraj also draws inspiration from global players, particularly Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson. Known for his composure and distribution, Ederson’s style has influenced Suraj’s approach.

“I try to follow his playing style especially his distribution and ability to start counterattacks,” he said.

With India set to face Bhutan in the semi-finals of the SAFF U20 Championship, Suraj’s journey adds an important dimension to the team’s campaign. His growth is not just technical—it is psychological. In elite sport, the difference between good and great often lies in habits. Suraj Aheibam’s story is a reminder that discipline is not always about doing more—it is about doing the right things consistently.

From late-night scrolling to match-winning saves, Suraj’s transformation underscores a broader truth in modern sport: performance begins with mindset. By choosing discipline over distraction, he has not only improved his game but also set a benchmark for young athletes navigating the challenges of the digital age.

As India’s U20 campaign progresses, Suraj will stand not just as a goalkeeper, but as an example of how small changes can lead to defining moments.
