India finally broke their long-standing jinx in Kochi, defeating Hong Kong 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to close their AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign on a positive note.

In front of a vibrant 22,000-plus crowd, the Blue Tigers delivered a composed and spirited performance, securing not only their first win of the qualifying campaign but also their first-ever victory in Kochi.

Goals from debutant Ryan Williams and left-back Akash Mishra in either half proved decisive, while a second-half strike from Everton Camargo ensured a tense finish to an otherwise controlled outing by the hosts.

India couldn’t have asked for a better opening. Within four minutes, Khalid Jamil’s decision to hand Ryan Williams his debut paid immediate dividends. A quick transition down the right flank saw Abhishek Singh Tekcham release Manvir Singh with a perfectly timed pass. Manvir, showing awareness and composure, squared the ball into the box where Williams arrived to calmly slot home.

The goal was significant beyond the scoreboard. It marked the fastest goal ever scored by an Indian debutant, surpassing records that had stood for decades. More importantly, it set the tone for a confident Indian display.

With the early breakthrough, India grew into the game, dominating possession and dictating tempo. The midfield, led by Lalengmawia (Apuia), ensured smooth transitions, while the attacking trio looked sharp and purposeful.

India continued to probe for a second goal. Manvir Singh remained influential, delivering a dangerous cross aimed at Lallianzuala Chhangte, only for the Hong Kong defence to intervene at the last moment. On another occasion, a slick counterattack saw Williams and Manvir combine before Chhangte tested the defence again.

Apuia came close midway through the half with a long-range effort that drifted narrowly wide, capping off a well-worked move. Despite India’s attacking intent, Hong Kong remained disciplined, attempting to build from the flanks and deliver crosses into the box.

However, India’s defensive organisation stood firm. Led by Sandesh Jhingan and Rahul Bheke, the backline maintained compactness, often surrounding Hong Kong attackers and limiting them to half-chances. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was largely untroubled as India went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.

India started the second half with the same intensity and were rewarded in the 50th minute. A long throw from Rahul Bheke caused chaos inside the Hong Kong penalty area. As the ball bounced loose, Akash Mishra reacted quickest, firing a right-footed shot from a tight angle into the net.

It was a landmark moment for the young left-back, who scored his first international goal. More importantly, it gave India a crucial two-goal cushion and further momentum.

Despite India’s control, Hong Kong found a way back into the contest in the 65th minute. A well-timed pass split the Indian defence, allowing Everton Camargo to make a perfectly timed run. He finished clinically past Gurpreet, reducing the deficit and setting up a nervy final quarter.

The goal shifted momentum briefly, with Hong Kong growing in confidence and pushing forward in search of an equaliser. India, meanwhile, were forced into changes as Ryan Williams and Anwar Ali were taken off due to injury concerns, making way for Ashique Kuruniyan and Jeakson Singh.

The introduction of Ashique Kuruniyan added fresh energy to India’s attack. The Kerala forward, buoyed by the home crowd, was immediately involved in multiple attacking moves. Within minutes, he had three attempts on goal—one saved, one deflected, and another narrowly wide.

At the other end, Hong Kong threatened through set-pieces and long-range efforts. Gurpreet Singh Sandhu was called into action, making crucial saves, including a strong stop from Ng Yu Hei’s strike. As the game entered its final stages, India continued to create chances but couldn’t find a third goal. Ashique combined well with Liston Colaco in a promising move, but once again, the Hong Kong defence held firm.

Debut and Defensive Steel

Late in the game, Bijoy Varghese was handed his international debut, adding to the list of positives for India on the night. The Kerala defender made an immediate impact, producing a crucial sliding tackle in stoppage time to deny Hong Kong a clear scoring opportunity.

India showed composure in the closing minutes, managing the game effectively and ensuring they held on to their lead.

While India’s overall qualifying campaign fell short of expectations finishing with five points from six matches the victory in Kochi provided a much-needed boost. It was a performance that reflected intent, structure, and resilience. For head coach Khalid Jamil, it also marked his first home win since taking charge, offering a glimpse of progress within the squad. The emergence of players like Ryan Williams, alongside consistent performers such as Manvir Singh and Akash Mishra, adds optimism for the future.

India’s 2-1 victory over Hong Kong was more than just three points it was a symbolic breakthrough. Ending a decade-long wait for a win in Kochi, the Blue Tigers delivered a performance that combined youthful energy with tactical discipline.

As the team looks ahead to future competitions, this result could serve as a foundation proof that, even in a challenging campaign, there are positives to build upon.
