The India U23 men’s national team’s promising run in the U23 Tri-Nation Championship 2026 ended in disappointment as they suffered a narrow 0-1 defeat to Tajikistan in the title decider at the Golden Jubilee Stadium in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh.

Despite an energetic and attack-minded performance, the Blue Colts were undone by an early goal and a series of missed opportunities.

A ninth-minute strike from Tajikistan’s Khaitov Azizbek proved decisive, as the visitors held firm defensively to secure the title with two wins from two matches, both accompanied by clean sheets. India, who had earlier defeated Bhutan convincingly, finished second in the standings.

Early Blow Despite Positive Start

India began the contest with intent, pressing high and attempting to unsettle the Tajik defence from the outset. The early approach nearly paid off in the eighth minute when Mohammed Sanan threaded a precise through ball to Suhail Ahmad Bhat. The forward found space but rushed his effort, sending it wide and missing a valuable opportunity to take the lead.

Moments later, India were made to pay. Tajikistan capitalised on a rare opening in the ninth minute when Azizbek attempted a long-range effort. The shot took a crucial deflection off Pramveer Singh’s shoulder, wrong-footing goalkeeper Mohan Raj and looping into the net. It was a slice of misfortune for India, but it handed Tajikistan an early advantage that ultimately shaped the match.

Conceding early did not deter the Blue Colts. Instead, they responded with urgency, pushing forward and creating multiple chances. Much of India’s attacking play revolved around the right flank, where Macarton Louis Nickson was instrumental in delivering dangerous balls into the box.

In the 14th minute, Macarton produced a brilliant run and cut-back to find Suhail in a prime position. However, Tajikistan captain and goalkeeper Gaforov Safarmad pulled off an excellent save from close range to deny India a deserved equaliser.

The game soon evolved into an open contest, with both sides creating opportunities. Tajikistan nearly doubled their lead in the 21st minute through a well-constructed move, but Mohan Raj produced a sharp double save to keep India in the game.

India continued to rely on width, with Sanan and Macarton delivering crosses into the penalty area. However, the final touch remained elusive, as the Tajik defence held firm under sustained pressure.

Midway through the first half, Tajikistan were forced into a change when goalkeeper Gaforov was substituted due to injury. Mahmudzoda Shahobiddin stepped in, but India were unable to capitalise on the disruption. Tomba Singh and Macarton attempted efforts from distance, but neither could trouble the substitute goalkeeper significantly. Despite dominating phases of play, India went into the break trailing by a solitary goal.

Second Half: Pressure Without Reward

Head coach Naushad Moosa made attacking changes at the start of the second half, introducing Lalthankima and Lalremtluanga Fanai to increase offensive thrust. The substitutions brought renewed energy, with India continuing to push forward in search of an equaliser.

Fanai quickly made an impact, delivering a dangerous free-kick into the box in the 50th minute, but Pramveer failed to connect. India’s attacking intent remained consistent, but Tajikistan’s defensive organisation ensured clear chances were limited.

Around the hour mark, India came close through intricate build-up play, only to be denied by a sharp save from Mahmudzoda. At the other end, Mohan Raj remained alert, producing another crucial save to prevent Tajikistan from extending their lead on the counter.

India’s best opportunity arrived in the 69th minute. Substitute Adison Singh Thokchom delivered a teasing cross from the left that evaded the defence and found Lalthankima in front of goal. However, the forward failed to make contact, with the goal at his mercy a moment that summed up India’s struggles in front of goal.

As the match progressed, Tajikistan began to drop deeper, focusing on defensive solidity and looking to exploit spaces on the counter. India, meanwhile, continued to search relentlessly for an equaliser.

In the 78th minute, Lalrinliana Hnamte threaded a precise through ball to Suhail, who managed to get a shot away under pressure. However, his effort curled wide, adding to India’s growing frustration.

India threw everything forward in the closing stages. Fanai won a free-kick just outside the box in stoppage time, offering one final opportunity. Suhail stepped up, but his effort sailed over the crossbar, effectively ending India’s hopes.

Defensively, India remained disciplined, with Ronney Kharbudon making a crucial late interception to prevent further damage. However, the inability to convert chances proved costly. While the result will sting, India’s performance offered several positives. The team showed the ability to dominate possession, create chances, and compete against a physically strong and tactically disciplined Tajikistan side.

However, the match also highlighted a key area for improvement finishing. The Blue Colts created enough opportunities to at least draw level, but lacked the clinical edge required at this level.

India’s 0-1 defeat to Tajikistan may have denied them the title, but it also provided valuable lessons for a young squad in development. The narrow margin reflects how competitive the contest was, even if the result did not go their way.

As the team looks ahead, the focus will be on refining their attacking efficiency and building on the positives from this campaign ensuring that performances like this translate into results in future tournaments.
