India’s boxing contingent is set to begin its campaign at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 with a mix of favourable draws and early high-pressure contests, as the official bout schedule revealed key matchups across weight categories.

With several top names receiving first-round byes and others facing challenging opponents, the stage is set for a crucial opening phase.

The draw presents a balanced outlook for India while experienced campaigners like Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain have been handed byes, allowing them to enter directly into later rounds, several young boxers will need to navigate tricky opening bouts.

Women’s Draw: Favourable Openings with Key Tests

India’s women’s team enters the tournament with depth and momentum, and the draw has provided a strong platform. Six Indian boxers—Nikhat Zareen (51kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Ankushita Boro (65kg), Arundhati Choudhary (70kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), and Alfiya Patahan (+80kg)—have all received byes, ensuring direct progression into the next round.

This not only reduces the physical load but also allows these boxers additional time to assess opponents and prepare tactically.

Among those in action in the opening round, Minakshi faces a technically sound opponent in Japan’s Yuka Sadamatasu in the 48kg category. The bout is expected to test her ability to handle disciplined, counter-attacking boxing.

Preeti Pawar, competing in the 54kg division, takes on Kazakhstan’s Elina Bazarova traditionally a strong boxing nation. Similarly, Priya (60kg) will face Rimma Volossenko of Kazakhstan, a matchup that could hinge on endurance and ring control.

Another key contest features veteran Pooja Rani, who will square off against Nadezhda Ryabets (Kazakhstan) in the 80kg category. With her experience at major tournaments, Pooja will be expected to navigate this challenge, but the bout is unlikely to be straightforward.

The men’s draw presents a more demanding route, with several Indian boxers facing tough opponents in the opening round.

In the 50kg category, Vishvanath Suresh will begin against Bekzat Ergeshov of Kyrgyzstan. The matchup is expected to be competitive, with both boxers relying on speed and agility.

The most challenging contest, however, falls in the 55kg category, where Jadumani Singh is set to face top seed Rui Yamaguchi of Japan. This bout stands out as one of the toughest first-round clashes for India, with Jadumani needing to deliver a near-flawless performance to progress. Sachin (60kg) will take on Mongolia’s Buyandalai Bayarkhuu, while Aditya Pratap Singh (65kg) faces Mouda Alhawsaw of Saudi Arabia. Both bouts offer opportunities but will require disciplined execution.

Deepak’s clash against Uzbekistan’s Khavasbek Asadullaev in the 70kg category is another high-stakes encounter. Uzbekistan has consistently produced strong boxers, making this a significant test.

Elsewhere, Akash (75kg), Lokesh (85kg), and Harsh Choudhary (90kg) also face competitive opponents, highlighting the depth of the men’s draw. For India, the byes handed to key names could prove decisive. Boxers like Nikhat and Lovlina, who have experience at the highest level, will benefit from entering the competition at a later stage.

This allows them to conserve energy and avoid early risks, while also gaining insights into potential opponents. In a tournament where recovery and momentum play crucial roles, such advantages can significantly impact medal prospects.

While the draw provides opportunities, the opening rounds will be critical in setting the tone for India’s campaign. For those in early bouts, managing pressure and adapting quickly to opponents’ styles will be essential. The diversity of opponents from Kazakhstan’s power-based approach to Japan’s technical precision means Indian boxers must be tactically flexible.

India enters the Asian Championships with strong expectations, particularly in the women’s categories where several boxers have proven international credentials. Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain remain among the top medal contenders, while emerging names like Ankushita Boro and Arundhati Choudhary will look to capitalise on their favourable draws.

On the men’s side, the path is more challenging, but performances in the early rounds could build momentum for deeper runs.

The draw for the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 has set up an intriguing start for India. With a combination of byes for top contenders and tough opening bouts for others, the campaign will test both depth and resilience.

As the competition begins, India’s focus will be on strong execution, tactical discipline, and building momentum. With the right balance, the contingent has the potential to deliver a successful outing on the continental stage.
