Tumakuru is set to enter the global tennis map as it prepares to host its first-ever ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour W35 tournament, a landmark development for the region’s sporting landscape.
The official logo of the event was unveiled on March 28, 2026, by Dr. G. Parameshwara, Karnataka’s Home Minister and Tumakuru District In-charge Minister, signalling the formal launch of what promises to be a significant addition to India’s international tennis calendar.
Scheduled from May 4 to May 10, 2026, the tournament will take place at the Tumkur District Tennis Stadium, located within the Tumkur University campus. The event marks the return of international tennis to Tumakuru after more than two decades, underlining a broader push to decentralise sporting opportunities beyond India’s traditional metropolitan hubs.
A Strategic Step for Indian Tennis
The tournament is part of the ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour, a global circuit designed to bridge the gap between junior tennis and the elite levels of the sport. Events at the W35 level play a crucial role in the development pathway, offering players ranking points and competitive exposure necessary to progress to higher-tier tournaments, including the WTA Tour.
With a prize pool of USD 30,000 and 35 valuable WTA ranking points on offer, the Tumakuru event is expected to attract a competitive field comprising emerging talents and experienced professionals. The structure will include a 32-player singles main draw, qualifying rounds, and a doubles competition, ensuring a full week of high-intensity tennis.

For Indian players, particularly those on the cusp of breaking into the top tiers, such tournaments provide critical opportunities to earn points on home soil, reduce travel costs, and gain exposure against international opponents.

The unveiling ceremony reflected strong administrative support, with several key officials in attendance, including Deputy Commissioner Smt. Subha Kalyan (IAS), Superintendent of Police Sri K. V. Ashok (IPS), Zilla Panchayat CEO Sri Ashwija (IAS), and Tournament Director Sri G. R. Amarnath.
This level of institutional involvement indicates a coordinated effort to deliver an event that meets international standards across infrastructure, logistics, and security.
Dr. Parameshwara, addressing the media, emphasised the broader impact of hosting such an event in a city like Tumakuru.
“This is more than just a tournament for Tumakuru it is an opportunity. By bringing an international women’s event here, we are taking sport beyond major cities and opening doors for young athletes, especially girls, to aim higher,” he said.
His remarks underline a key theme in India’s evolving sports policy expanding access and creating aspirational platforms in non-metro regions.
Building a Sporting Ecosystem
Beyond the immediate competition, the tournament is expected to have a ripple effect on the local sporting ecosystem. Exposure to international-level tennis can inspire grassroots participation, particularly among young athletes who now have the chance to witness high-performance sport firsthand.
Smt. Subha Kalyan highlighted this aspect, noting that the event is also an opportunity to position Tumakuru as a capable host for global sporting events.
“We are working closely with organisers to ensure that every aspect—from infrastructure and logistics to hospitality meets international standards. This is about showcasing Tumakuru’s potential on a global stage,” she said.
Such initiatives are critical in building long-term sporting infrastructure and creating a sustainable pipeline of talent.
A Boost for Women’s Tennis
The focus on a women’s tournament is particularly significant in the Indian context. While tennis has produced notable female athletes from the country, consistent exposure to international competition remains a challenge for many.
Hosting a W35 event not only provides ranking opportunities but also contributes to normalising women’s participation in high-performance sport at the grassroots level. For young girls in and around Tumakuru, the visibility of international women athletes competing locally can serve as a powerful motivator.
Economic and Cultural Impact
Events of this scale also contribute to local economic activity. With players, coaches, officials, and spectators expected to travel to Tumakuru, there will be increased demand for hospitality, transport, and related services. Moreover, the tournament offers a platform to integrate sport with regional identity, showcasing Tumakuru’s infrastructure, culture, and organisational capabilities to an international audience.
As preparations gather pace, the focus will be on delivering a seamless event experience. Ensuring high-quality playing conditions, efficient scheduling, and athlete-friendly facilities will be key to establishing Tumakuru as a recurring venue on the ITF circuit. If executed successfully, the tournament could pave the way for more international events in the region, strengthening Karnataka’s position as a hub for tennis development.
