Recognition in elite sport often follows years of consistency, but for Prince Deep Singh, the validation has arrived early and emphatically.

The 21-year-old goalkeeper has been nominated in two major categories at the Hockey India 8th Annual Awards 2025, marking a significant milestone in a career that is still in its formative phase.

Prince finds himself in contention for the Hockey India Baljit Singh Award for Goalkeeper of the Year 2025 as well as the Hockey India Jugraj Singh Award for Upcoming Player of the Year (Men – Under 21). For a player yet to make his senior international debut, the nominations underline both his performances and his growing stature within Indian hockey’s ecosystem.

Currently training with the senior national camp, Prince’s journey reflects a rapid progression through the ranks. Since breaking into the Indian junior setup in 2024, he has already built a credible portfolio of performances. His contributions were instrumental in India securing gold at the FIH Junior Asia Cup 2024, followed by a silver at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2025 and a bronze medal at the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025.

What stands out is not just the medals, but the contexts in which he delivered. At the Junior World Cup, Prince was central to India’s run to the podium, particularly in high-pressure knockout fixtures. The quarter-final against Belgium remains a defining moment.

“That match was do-or-die,” Prince recalled. “We conceded late and it went into a shootout. My teammates backed me, and when I made those early saves, it reduced the pressure. The crowd and atmosphere actually helped me focus more.”

Such performances have accelerated his integration into the senior setup, where he now trains alongside established goalkeepers. Adding further credibility to his rise was his standout campaign in the Hero Hockey India League 2025-26, where he was named ‘Goalkeeper of the Tournament’ while representing the Tamil Nadu Dragons.

Despite the rapid ascent, Prince’s beginnings were far from conventional. Hailing from Pathankot, his early years in sport did not point towards goalkeeping. He began as a full-back at the Cheema Hockey Academy in Batala, balancing hockey training with recreational football.

It was during those football sessions that his natural aptitude for goalkeeping emerged. “I used to play as a goalkeeper in football and made some good saves. My coaches noticed my height and reflexes and suggested I try goalkeeping in hockey. That’s how it started,” he said.

That transition—from outfield player to goalkeeper—has since evolved into a specialised craft. At the elite level, goalkeeping is as much about mental conditioning as it is about reflexes and technique. Prince acknowledges this aspect as a key area of growth.

“There is always pressure crowd, match situation, expectations,” he explained. “I start preparing mentally a day before. Rest, clarity, and planning are important. During the game, communication helps me stay in control. The more I talk, the more focused I am.”

His development has also been shaped by exposure to top-level competition. The Sultan of Johor Cup 2025, where India finished with silver, proved particularly instructive. Facing physically dominant and tactically sharp teams like Australia highlighted the margins required at the highest level.

“It made me realise how important it is to give 100% in every moment,” he said. “At that level, even small lapses can cost you.”

The double nomination places Prince alongside some of India’s established names in goalkeeping, including Krishan Bahadur Pathak, Suraj Karkera, and Bichu Devi Kharibam. For a player without a senior cap, this inclusion signals both recognition and expectation.

“India has a strong pool of goalkeepers. To be nominated among them, even before my senior debut, feels special. It gives me confidence that I am on the right path,” Prince noted.

Perhaps the most telling aspect of this recognition lies in its psychological impact. For a young athlete navigating the transition from junior to senior levels, validation at this stage can be transformative.

“This clears a lot of doubts I had about myself,” he admitted. “Now I know I’m doing something right. I just want to keep improving and build on this.”

That clarity of belief is critical in a position where mistakes are often magnified. Goalkeepers operate under constant scrutiny, and the ability to recover mentally is as important as technical proficiency.

Prince’s focus now remains firmly on progression earning his senior debut, consolidating his place in the national setup, and continuing to refine his game. His ambitions are aligned with the long-term goals of Indian hockey.

“My dream is to become the main goalkeeper for India and win an Olympic gold medal,” he said.

Beyond individual aspirations, he also emphasised the importance of recognition platforms like the Hockey India Annual Awards. “These awards are a big source of motivation, especially for young players. Even getting nominated is a huge achievement and pushes us to do better.”

As Indian hockey continues to strengthen its talent pipeline, stories like Prince Deep Singh’s underline the effectiveness of structured pathways and competitive exposure. His journey from a football-playing youngster in Pathankot to a double nominee at national awards illustrates both opportunity and execution.

For now, the awards remain a milestone. What follows will determine whether this early recognition translates into sustained excellence at the highest level.
