After more than two decades, Tumakuru is set to re-establish itself on the international tennis map as it prepares to host an ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour W35 event from May 4 to 10, 2026.

The tournament, to be held at the Tumkur District Tennis Stadium within the Tumkur University campus, marks a significant milestone not only for the city but also for Karnataka’s expanding footprint in global tennis.

With a prize purse of $30,000, the event represents a crucial tier in the ITF Women’s circuit, offering valuable ranking points and competitive exposure for players aiming to transition to the WTA Tour. Featuring a 32-player singles main draw along with qualifying rounds, the tournament is expected to attract a mix of emerging international talent and India’s leading professionals.

This development is particularly noteworthy for Tumakuru, which last hosted an international tennis event in 2003 the ATP Challenger, popularly known as the Tumkur Open. That event featured prominent names such as Rohan Bopanna and Prakash Amritraj, while Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber clinched the title.

Among the standout participants was Marcos Baghdatis, who would later rise to World No. 8 and finish runner-up at the 2006 Australian Open. That edition remains the only international tennis tournament hosted by the city until now.

The return of an international event signals both revival and progression. Over the years, Tumakuru has sustained a strong tennis culture at the district and university levels, supported by functional infrastructure and grassroots engagement. The upcoming W35 tournament builds on that foundation, reflecting a broader vision to decentralise Indian tennis and move beyond traditional hubs like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Pune.

Karnataka has emerged as one of the most proactive states in promoting tennis infrastructure and hosting international competitions. Following successful tournaments in Bengaluru and Kalaburagi, the addition of Tumakuru to the calendar further strengthens the state’s position as a key centre for the sport. It also aligns with the strategic objective of taking high-performance events to tier-2 cities, thereby widening access and visibility.

Dr. G. Parameshwara, Hon’ble Minister for Home and District Incharge Minister, highlighted the importance of the occasion, calling it a proud moment for Tumakuru. He emphasised that the tournament reflects the district’s sporting culture, infrastructural progress, and commitment to hosting global events. His remarks underline the administrative backing that has been crucial in bringing such competitions to emerging centres.

Echoing this sentiment, Priyank M. Kharge, Minister for IT/BT and Rural Development and Senior Vice President of the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA), pointed to the long-term vision behind the initiative. Expanding world-class sporting opportunities beyond major urban centres, he noted, is essential for nurturing talent and building a sustainable sports ecosystem. The Tumakuru event, in this context, serves both as a competitive platform and a developmental catalyst.

From a player’s perspective, ITF W35 events are critical stepping stones. They offer not only ranking points but also exposure to varied playing styles and competitive conditions. For Indian players, competing on home soil provides an added advantage familiar conditions, local support, and reduced travel strain. At the same time, the presence of international participants raises the competitive standard, creating an environment conducive to growth.

The tournament is also expected to have a ripple effect at the grassroots level. Young players from the region will have the opportunity to witness high-quality tennis firsthand, an experience that can inspire and shape aspirations. Access to such events often plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between grassroots participation and professional ambition.

Administrative readiness will be key to the tournament’s success. Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Smt. Subha Kalyan has assured that the district administration is working in close coordination with stakeholders to ensure seamless execution. From infrastructure readiness to logistical planning, the emphasis is on delivering an event that meets international standards.

The choice of venue the Tumkur District Tennis Stadium adds further significance. Located within a university campus, it represents the integration of sports and education, a model increasingly being recognised for its long-term benefits. Hosting an international event in such a setting reinforces the role of academic institutions in supporting high-performance sport.

Beyond the immediate competition, the ITF W35 in Tumakuru carries broader implications. It reflects a shift in how Indian tennis is being structured less centralised, more inclusive, and increasingly aligned with global pathways. By bringing international tournaments to emerging cities, stakeholders are not only expanding the sport’s footprint but also creating new ecosystems of opportunity.

As the countdown to May begins, anticipation is building for what promises to be a landmark event in Tumakuru’s sporting history. With a blend of competitive tennis, administrative support, and strategic vision, the tournament is poised to mark a new chapter not just for the city, but for Indian tennis as a whole.

In returning to the global tennis map, Tumakuru is not merely revisiting its past it is redefining its future.
