Mumbai City FC delivered a tactically disciplined and defensively resolute performance to edge past Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1-0 in a high-intensity Indian Super League, ISL 2025-26 clash at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.
A first-half goal from Noufal PN, combined with an outstanding display from goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa, ensured the Islanders climbed to the top of the standings.
The victory not only extended Mumbai’s unbeaten run but also saw them move one point clear of Mohun Bagan, who slipped to second with 13 points. Lachenpa, who produced a series of crucial saves under sustained pressure, was rightly adjudged Player of the Match.

In the 40th minute, he made a sharp diving save to deny Jason Cummings’ header, reacting quickly to keep the ball out. Lachenpa continued to be the difference-maker. In the 69th minute, he produced another excellent save to deny Mohun Bagan, maintaining his composure under relentless pressure.

As the match entered its final stages, Mohun Bagan threw everything forward in search of an equaliser. Sahal Abdul Samad came close with a long-range effort in the 90th minute, while Petratos had a late opportunity from a free-kick but failed to keep his shot on target.
Despite sustained pressure and territorial dominance, the Mariners were unable to break down Mumbai’s defensive unit. The Islanders’ backline, marshalled effectively and supported by disciplined midfield tracking, held firm until the final whistle.
