The Indian Football League 2025-26 season continues to build momentum with two key fixtures lined up on Thursday, March 19, as Chanmari FC host Shillong Lajong FC in Aizawl, while Sreenidi Deccan FC take on Namdhari Sports Academy in Hyderabad.

With league standings beginning to take shape, both matches carry significant implications for teams looking to strengthen their positions early in the campaign.

The afternoon fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl promises to be a compelling Northeast derby, as league debutants Chanmari FC look to maintain their unbeaten run against a resilient Shillong Lajong side aiming to bounce back from defeat.

Chanmari FC have been one of the early surprises of the season. Despite their status as newcomers, the Aizawl-based side has shown remarkable composure and tactical clarity under head coach Victor Lalbiakmawia. Their recent 2-2 draw against Dempo SC highlighted both their attacking potential and their ability to compete with established teams.

A key feature of Chanmari’s approach has been their structured defensive setup combined with quick transitions on the counter. Brazilian winger Jota has been instrumental in stretching defences, while Christopher Kamei’s delivery from set-pieces has provided a consistent attacking outlet. However, they will be without defender Malsawmsanga Renthlei, whose suspension following a red card could test their defensive depth.

Shillong Lajong, on the other hand, arrive in Aizawl with a point to prove. Their narrow 1-2 loss to Diamond Harbour FC exposed early defensive lapses, with two quick goals conceded inside the opening 20 minutes ultimately proving costly. Yet, the Meghalaya-based side showed character in the second half, pushing hard and nearly salvaging a result.

Head coach Birendra Thapa has stressed the importance of a quick response in a tightly packed league schedule. “It’s very important to bounce back from the last defeat because it’s a short league. Three points will give us a massive boost,” he said. Thapa also acknowledged the challenge posed by Chanmari, noting their strong start and well-rounded squad.

The clash is expected to be a high-tempo contest, with both sides relying heavily on local talent and attacking intent. Shillong will look to tighten their defensive organisation while continuing to exploit wide areas, while Chanmari will aim to capitalise on their home advantage and maintain their unbeaten streak.

Later in the evening, attention shifts to Hyderabad, where Sreenidi Deccan FC will host Namdhari Sports Academy at the Deccan Arena. With kick-off scheduled for 18:30 IST, the match offers Sreenidi an opportunity to consolidate their position at the top end of the table.

Sreenidi Deccan come into the fixture on the back of a disciplined 1-0 away win over Gokulam Kerala FC, a result that underlined their defensive solidity and tactical maturity under head coach Carlos Manuel Vaz Pinto. Having provisionally climbed to the top of the standings, the Deccan Warriors will be keen to build momentum, especially with a favourable run of home fixtures ahead.

“We play at home really well. It is always great playing in front of our home fans,” Vaz Pinto said, highlighting the importance of capitalising on their home advantage. With five consecutive home games lined up, Sreenidi have a valuable opportunity to establish themselves as early title contenders.

Defender Muhammad Hammad echoed this confidence, pointing to the team’s strong pre-season preparation and tactical clarity. However, both coach and players remain wary of the challenge posed by Namdhari.

The Ludhiana-based side may be coming off a heartbreaking 2-3 defeat to Rajasthan United, but their performance in that match showcased their fighting spirit. Trailing late in the game, Namdhari staged an impressive comeback to level the score, only to concede in stoppage time.

Their aggressive pressing style and physical approach make them a difficult opponent, particularly in transition phases. However, they will be without a key figure in defence, as captain Lamine Moro is suspended following his red card in the previous match. His absence could leave gaps at the back, something Sreenidi will look to exploit.

Historically, the head-to-head record between the two sides has been closely contested. Sreenidi hold a slight edge with two wins compared to Namdhari’s one, along with a draw. However, Namdhari’s 1-0 win in their most recent meeting at the same venue serves as a reminder that they are capable of upsetting the hosts.

As the league progresses, these fixtures represent more than just three points. For Chanmari, it is about proving their consistency against strong opposition. For Shillong Lajong, it is a test of resilience and recovery. Meanwhile, Sreenidi Deccan will look to assert their title credentials, while Namdhari aim to translate their fighting performances into results.

With contrasting styles, tactical battles, and significant stakes, Thursday’s double-header promises another engaging chapter in the Indian Football League season.
