The Orleans Masters witnessed a day of high-intensity badminton action in the Round of 32, with Indian shuttlers delivering a mix of impressive victories and hard-fought defeats.

While several young names stepped up with strong performances, the day also exposed the depth and challenges of competing at the highest level on the BWF circuit.

One of the standout Indian performances came in the women’s singles, where Anmol Kharb continued her steady rise with a commanding straight-games victory over Turkey’s Neslihan Arin. Kharb controlled the tempo throughout the contest, winning 21-12, 21-16 in just 34 minutes. Her ability to dictate rallies and maintain consistency under pressure highlighted her growing maturity on the international stage.

Joining her in the winners’ circle was Malvika Bansod, who produced a composed performance to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo Yun 21-18, 21-14. Bansod looked sharp in both attack and defense, managing crucial points efficiently and ensuring she stayed ahead during key phases of the match.

Another encouraging result came from Tanvi Sharma, who registered a solid win over Thailand’s Supanida Katethong. Winning 21-18, 21-14, Sharma showcased her tactical awareness and ability to close out games without letting momentum slip. Isharani Baruah also impressed with a straight-games win over Denmark’s Amalie Schulz, winning 21-19, 21-19 in a tightly contested match where composure at crucial junctures proved decisive.

In mixed doubles, the Indian pair of Rohan and Ruthvika delivered a confident performance, overcoming Tsai and Sung in straight games (21-15, 21-9). Their coordination and control at the net were key factors in a match where they rarely allowed their opponents to settle.

However, the day also featured several narrow losses that could have gone either way. In men’s singles, Kiran George and Ayush Shetty were involved in an all-Indian clash that turned into a three-game battle. Ayush Shetty eventually emerged victorious 17-21, 21-10, 21-17, displaying resilience after dropping the opening game. The match highlighted the growing depth in Indian men’s singles, with both players showcasing attacking intent and endurance.

Tharun Mannepalli came agonisingly close to pulling off a major win against Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei. After splitting the first two games, Mannepalli pushed his opponent to the limit in a thrilling decider but eventually went down 18-21, 21-14, 21-23. The narrow margin reflected both his fighting spirit and the fine line between victory and defeat at this level.

In contrast, it was a disappointing outing for experienced campaigner Kidambi Srikanth, who suffered a straight-games loss to Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen. Srikanth struggled to find rhythm, going down 12-21, 10-21 in a one-sided encounter that underlined the challenges he continues to face against younger, faster opponents on tour.

The women’s singles also saw some heartbreaks for India. Aakarshi Kashyap was outplayed by Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min in straight games, while Rakshitha S S R fell to Japan’s Manami Suizu without managing to take a game. Devika Sihag fought hard in a three-game contest against Hong Kong’s Lo Sin Yan Happy but eventually lost 21-15, 14-21, 15-21 after a promising start.

In mixed doubles, Dhruv and Tanisha also bowed out after losing to the Indonesian pair Dejan and Bernadine in straight games. Despite moments of competitiveness, the Indian duo struggled to match the pace and precision of their opponents.

Overall, the Round of 32 at the Orleans Masters highlighted a clear trend in Indian badminton a promising pipeline of young talent capable of competing strongly, but also the need for greater consistency against top-tier international opponents. Players like Anmol Kharb, Tanvi Sharma, and Ayush Shetty demonstrated that the next generation is ready to step up, while experienced names will need to find ways to adapt and regain their edge.

As the tournament progresses into the later rounds, India will look to build on these positives while addressing the gaps exposed in closely contested matches. The performances in Orleans serve as both a reflection of progress and a reminder of the work still required to consistently challenge for titles at the highest level.
