Rajasthan United FC climbed to the top of the standings with a gritty 1-0 victory over Real Kashmir FC in the Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26, as Amadou Soukouna’s first-half goal proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter at the Vidhyadhar Nagar Stadium in Jaipur on Tuesday.

In a match that saw momentum swings, defensive discipline, and late drama, Rajasthan combined control with resilience, while Real Kashmir’s challenge was ultimately undone by two red cards and an inability to convert their attacking intent into goals.

Rajasthan Control Early Proceedings

The hosts began the match on the front foot, dominating possession and looking to dictate tempo through structured build-up play. Rajasthan United displayed composure in midfield, circulating the ball patiently and probing for openings.

Their early dominance forced Real Kashmir goalkeeper Furqan Ahmed into action in the 10th minute, where he made a sharp intervention to deny a potential breakthrough. Despite Rajasthan’s control, clear-cut chances remained limited, with Real Kashmir maintaining a compact defensive shape. The visitors gradually settled into the contest and began to threaten on set-pieces and transitions. In the 13th minute, Kamal Issah’s free-kick created a dangerous moment, but Rajasthan defender Abdul Samed was alert to clear the danger.

Real Kashmir’s defensive unit, marshalled by Basit Ahmed Bhat and Habib Fofana, held firm for much of the first half, frustrating Rajasthan’s attacking efforts. Their disciplined approach ensured that Rajasthan were forced into long-range attempts and speculative deliveries rather than clear openings.

Midway through the half, Ahteeb Ahmad Dar had an opportunity to test the Rajasthan defence but failed to keep his effort on target, highlighting the lack of clinical finishing at both ends.

As the first half approached stoppage time, Rajasthan finally found the breakthrough they had been searching for.

A well-constructed move down the right flank saw Jordan Lamela deliver a precise cross into the box. Soukouna, who had been a constant presence in the attacking third, timed his run perfectly and finished with a composed first-time strike into the bottom corner. The goal, coming in first-half stoppage time (45+2’), shifted momentum firmly in Rajasthan’s favour heading into the break.

Soukouna nearly doubled his tally moments later, but Furqan Ahmed reacted well to deny the striker, keeping Real Kashmir within reach of the contest.

Turning Point: Red Card Changes the Game

Real Kashmir began the second half with renewed urgency, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. However, the match took a decisive turn in the 58th minute, when Habib Fofana was shown a second yellow card, reducing the visitors to ten men.

The dismissal disrupted Real Kashmir’s defensive structure and forced them to recalibrate their approach. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors showed commendable spirit, continuing to press forward and look for opportunities.

With an extra man, Rajasthan United had the opportunity to put the game beyond doubt. They introduced fresh legs and looked to exploit spaces left by Real Kashmir. Soukouna remained at the centre of Rajasthan’s attacking efforts, frequently finding himself in promising positions. However, a combination of resilient defending and missed opportunities prevented the hosts from extending their lead.

Substitute Naoba Meitei also had chances to make an impact but failed to convert, keeping the contest alive deep into the final stages.

Late Drama Compounds Real Kashmir’s Struggles

As the match entered stoppage time, Real Kashmir’s hopes of salvaging a point were dealt another blow. Substitute Calvin Baretto was shown a direct red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, reducing the visitors to nine men. The second dismissal effectively ended any chance of a comeback, leaving Real Kashmir to see out the remaining minutes with limited resources.

Rajasthan Hold Firm for Crucial Win

Despite failing to add a second goal, Rajasthan United managed the closing stages effectively, maintaining defensive discipline and controlling possession to secure all three points. The victory sees Rajasthan provisionally move to the top of the table with seven points, underlining their strong start to the season. For Real Kashmir, the defeat leaves them at the bottom of the standings with just two points, highlighting the need for improved discipline and finishing in upcoming matches.

Soukouna’s performance stood out as the defining factor in the match. His movement, positioning, and composure in front of goal earned him the Player of the Match award and ultimately decided the contest. For Rajasthan, the result reflects a team capable of controlling games and grinding out results, even when not at their clinical best. However, their inability to convert multiple chances into goals remains an area for improvement.

Real Kashmir, on the other hand, will take positives from their defensive organisation and fighting spirit, particularly after going down to ten men. But the two red cards and lack of cutting edge in attack proved costly. In a match defined by fine margins and key moments, Rajasthan United did just enough to secure victory. Soukouna’s timely strike, combined with disciplined defending, ensured they emerged on top in a hard-fought encounter.

As the season progresses, performances like this built on structure, patience, and decisive finishing could prove crucial in shaping Rajasthan United’s campaign.
