The Indian Women’s Hockey Team have already secured their place at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026, but their campaign at the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 in Hyderabad is far from over.
With qualification achieved, the hosts are now fully focused on the next objective winning the tournament title. India will face Italy in the semi-final on March 13 at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground in Hyderabad, with the hosts aiming to continue their impressive run in front of home supporters.
Dominant Pool Stage Performance
India’s journey to the semi-finals has been built on a strong and consistent performance in the pool stage. The hosts finished top of Pool B with seven points from three matches, edging Scotland on goal difference despite both teams finishing with the same number of points. India opened their campaign in dominant fashion with a convincing 4–0 victory over Uruguay, setting the tone for the rest of the tournament.
The Indian attack looked sharp, while the defence maintained control throughout the match to secure a comfortable win. The second group match proved more challenging as India faced a determined Scotland side, with the match ending in a 2–2 draw after an intense contest.

However, India returned to winning ways in the final pool match, producing a 4–1 victory over Wales to seal top spot in the group. The match was highlighted by a brilliant performance from forward Navneet Kaur, who scored a stunning hat-trick to guide the team to victory.

India’s strong performance in the qualifiers also confirmed their place at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026. Under the tournament qualification system, the highest-ranked team finishing fourth across the two qualifying events secures a World Cup berth.
The first leg of the qualifiers in Santiago saw Chile, Australia, and Ireland claim the three direct qualification spots. Japan finished fourth in that tournament and are currently ranked World No. 15. India, who entered the qualifiers ranked World No. 9, ensured they would finish as the highest-ranked fourth-placed team across both tournaments. This result confirmed their qualification regardless of the remaining matches.
For the Indian team, securing World Cup qualification was one of the primary objectives heading into the tournament. Achieving that goal early in the competition has now allowed the team to focus fully on the title race. With two wins and one draw in the group stage, India have built strong momentum heading into the knockout rounds.
Their attacking unit has been particularly impressive, creating numerous scoring opportunities while maintaining pressure on opposing defences. Forward Navneet Kaur has been one of the standout performers of the tournament so far. With four goals, she currently sits among the joint top scorers of the competition.
Her hat-trick against Wales not only secured a crucial win for India but also highlighted the attacking depth the hosts possess going into the semi-finals.
Italy Provide the Next Challenge
Standing in India’s way of a place in the final is Italy, who finished second in Pool A with four points after recording one win, one draw, and one defeat. While Italy may not have the same tournament momentum as India, they have proven to be a competitive and disciplined side capable of challenging strong opponents.
Italy’s attacking threat will largely revolve around Federica Carta, who has scored three goals in the tournament so far and remains their most dangerous forward. India’s defence will need to remain organised to prevent Carta and the Italian attack from finding opportunities inside the circle.
Head-to-Head Advantage for India
Historically, India have enjoyed a strong record against Italy. Since 2012, the two teams have met seven times, with India winning five matches. Italy have managed one victory, while one match ended in a draw. Although past records do not guarantee results, the head-to-head statistics provide India with a slight psychological advantage heading into the semi-final.
Focus on the Title
Indian head coach Sjoerd Marijne praised the team’s performance in the tournament but emphasised that the squad remains focused on winning the title. “Securing qualification for the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 is an important milestone for this group, and the players deserve a lot of credit for the way they have performed so far in the tournament,” Marijne said.
“They have shown good discipline, composure, and attacking intent throughout the pool stage.”
However, the coach made it clear that the team’s ambitions extend beyond qualification. “Our mindset is very clear we are not here just to qualify. We want to keep improving with every match and aim to win the tournament,” he added.
Playing on home soil in Hyderabad has given India additional confidence, with strong crowd support playing a role in their performances so far. The semi-final against Italy presents another important step in India’s campaign. A victory would send the hosts into the final and bring them closer to lifting the FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 title.
As the tournament reaches its decisive stages, India will look to maintain their attacking momentum and defensive discipline to continue their successful run. With World Cup qualification already secured, the Blue Tigresses now have their sights firmly set on finishing the tournament as champions.
