Dempo Sports Club and Real Kashmir FC played out a dramatic 2-2 draw in the Indian Football League (IFL) 2025-26 at the PJN Stadium in Fatorda on Sunday evening, in a match defined by late first-half drama and a breathtaking exchange of goals just after the hour mark.

The contest had everything a stunning long-range opener, a pressure penalty, a towering header from a set-piece, and a lightning-fast counterattack. In the end, neither side could find a decisive breakthrough, settling for a point each after an absorbing ninety minutes.

Early Control, Sudden Disruption

Dempo began on the front foot, dominating possession and dictating the tempo in the opening exchanges. Their approach was patient, circulating the ball through midfield and probing for openings down the flanks. However, despite territorial advantage, clear-cut chances were limited.

The home side’s rhythm was disrupted early when captain Ariston Costa suffered a serious head injury following an aerial collision. Play was halted as medical staff attended to him, and he was eventually stretchered off and transported by ambulance. Knerkitalang Buam replaced the skipper, and Dempo were forced to reorganise defensively.

Despite the emotional setback, Dempo regained composure and continued to press. Richmond Kwasi Owusu came closest during this phase, unleashing a powerful effort that forced a sharp save from Real Kashmir goalkeeper Sayad Bin Abdul Kadir.

Just when it appeared the half would end goalless, the game erupted in added time.

In the second minute of stoppage time (45+2’), Real Kashmir struck against the run of play. Left winger Mohammad Inam collected possession on the flank and unleashed a sublime curling effort from distance. The strike arced beautifully into the far corner, leaving the goalkeeper rooted and handing the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The goal stunned the home crowd, but Dempo’s response was immediate.

Moments later, the hosts earned a penalty after Abdul Kadir brought down an attacker inside the box in a clear foul. Marcus Joseph stepped up under pressure in first-half injury time (45+5’) and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to restore parity. The Trinidadian’s composure ensured the sides went into the break level at 1-1 after a frantic end to the half.

The second half resumed with greater intensity from both teams, each sensing vulnerability in the other’s defensive line.

Dempo regained the lead in the 61st minute through a well-executed set-piece. Sebastian Gutierrez delivered a precise, inswinging corner that found Aubin Kouakou rising above his marker. The defender powered a header into the net, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage and shifting momentum firmly in their favour.

Yet the celebration had barely subsided before Real Kashmir responded.

Within a minute (62’), the visitors launched a swift counterattack that exposed a momentary lapse in Dempo’s defensive organisation. The ball was worked quickly into the attacking third, where Shedrack Charles capitalised on the space. The Nigerian forward showed clinical composure, finishing decisively to make it 2-2 in a stunning turnaround.

The rapid exchange of goals transformed the contest into an open, end-to-end affair.

Tactical Adjustments and Late Push

Both head coaches reacted with substitutions in search of a winning edge. Dempo introduced Laximanrao Rane and Amay Morajkar to add fresh legs and attacking thrust, while Real Kashmir responded by bringing on Basit Ahmed Bhat and Djibril Fandje Toure to maintain attacking presence.

As the clock ticked into the final stages, Dempo pushed aggressively for a late winner. The hosts pinned Real Kashmir back, delivering crosses and forcing hurried clearances inside the box.

The clearest opportunity came in stoppage time. Marcus Joseph timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap and surged into the penalty area. Goalkeeper Ashish Sibi rushed off his line in an attempt to narrow the angle. Joseph rounded him with composure, setting up a curling finish toward an open net but the effort drifted agonisingly wide of the far post.

It was the final major chance of the evening.

When the referee blew the final whistle, both sides were left reflecting on what might have been.

For Dempo, there was encouragement in their control of possession and effectiveness from set-pieces, but defensive lapses at key moments proved costly. For Real Kashmir, the result reinforced their resilience and ability to strike quickly on the counter, even when under sustained pressure.

The 2-2 draw ultimately reflected the balance of the contest a match where momentum shifted sharply and neither team could sustain control long enough to close it out. On an evening of high drama in Fatorda, the spoils were shared, but the spectacle ensured the IFL’s opening weekend delivered on intensity and entertainment.
