Odisha FC and Chennaiyin FC settled for a 1-1 draw in their Indian Super League 2025-26 encounter at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, in a match shaped by two set-piece goals and disciplined defensive phases from both sides.

A second-half header from Odisha captain Carlos Delgado cancelled out Elsinho’s stoppage-time strike at the end of the first half, ensuring both teams walked away with a point. The result leaves Odisha provisionally ninth in the standings with two points, while Chennaiyin sit eleventh with one point. Odisha left-back Saviour Gama was named Player of the Match for his defensive solidity and timely interventions.

The contest began at a measured tempo, with both teams cautious in possession and structured without the ball. Odisha head coach TG Purushottaman retained the same starting XI from the previous fixture, signalling continuity in approach. Chennaiyin boss Clifford Miranda introduced Farukh Choudhary and Maheson Singh in an effort to sharpen the flanks.

Clear-cut opportunities were rare in the opening quarter. Odisha’s first promising moment came in the 14th minute when Isak Ralte broke down the left flank during a quick transition. Cutting inside onto his stronger foot, he attempted a low drive across goal, but the effort drifted wide of the far post.

Chennaiyin gradually grew into the match. In the 25th minute, striker Iñigo Martín found space on the right side of the box and struck toward goal, only for Saviour Gama to block decisively. The visitors continued to apply pressure through set-pieces, with Pritam Kotal heading wide from an Alberto Noguera corner five minutes later. Martín remained involved, sending another effort just over the bar in the 34th minute.

Odisha attempted to respond before the interval. Rahim Ali tried his luck from distance in the 41st minute, but his speculative effort failed to trouble goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz.

Just as the first half appeared destined to end goalless, Chennaiyin capitalised on a set-piece opportunity in added time. In the second minute of stoppage time (45’+2), Farukh Choudhary delivered an accurate corner from the left. Elsinho, left unmarked inside the six-yard box, rose highest to power a header past Amrinder Singh and give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The timing of the goal was significant, shifting momentum in Chennaiyin’s favour heading into the break.

Odisha, however, nearly produced an immediate response. Rahul KP tested Nawaz with a curling effort that required an acrobatic save toward the top corner. From the ensuing set-piece, Rahim Ali headed wide before Rahul’s follow-up attempt was blocked in a crowded area.

Despite the late surge, the hosts entered halftime trailing by a goal.

The second half resumed in a similar tactical pattern. Both teams maintained compact defensive lines, limiting space between midfield and defence. Chennaiyin substitute Imran Khan attempted a left-footed strike in the 60th minute, but the ball sailed over the crossbar.

Odisha’s equaliser arrived through another dead-ball situation in the 68th minute. After Isak Ralte earned a free-kick near the halfway line, Lalthathanga Khawlhring delivered a deep, curling ball into the penalty area. Carlos Delgado timed his leap perfectly, rising above the defensive line to guide a firm header into the net and level the score at 1-1.

The goal injected renewed urgency into the contest. Chennaiyin sought to regain their advantage quickly. Imran Khan tested Amrinder Singh from a narrow angle in the 70th minute, but the goalkeeper was well positioned to gather comfortably. Iñigo Martín then dragged a close-range effort wide four minutes later after finding space inside the box.

At the other end, Odisha maintained defensive organisation, with Delgado commanding the backline and Gama continuing to intercept attacking moves down the flank. Rohit Kumar came close in the 85th minute but headed over from inside the area. As the clock wound down, both sides pressed cautiously. Odisha probed through wide channels, while Chennaiyin attempted to exploit transitional moments. However, neither team managed to create a clear scoring opportunity in the final stages.

The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw a result reflective of a contest defined more by structure than sustained attacking fluidity. For Odisha, the comeback highlighted resilience and effectiveness from set-pieces, though their inability to convert open-play chances remains an area for refinement. Chennaiyin, meanwhile, will draw positives from their defensive discipline and first-half control but may reflect on missed opportunities to capitalise further after taking the lead.

In the end, both teams leave Bhubaneswar with a point and with clear indications of areas to sharpen as the season progresses.
