Kerala Blasters FC have officially confirmed that they will continue to play their home matches at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kochi, bringing clarity after months of uncertainty surrounding the club’s venue plans .
The confirmation, announced on February 10, 2026, ends speculation about a possible relocation and ensures that the Blasters will remain at their traditional home in Kaloor for the 2025–26 Indian Super League season. For a club deeply rooted in its fan culture, the decision carries sporting, financial and emotional significance.
Stability After a Period of Uncertainty
The ISL calendar was thrown into turmoil during the 2025 off-season due to administrative challenges surrounding the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL). The delay forced a postponement of the league’s traditional September kickoff, pushing the 2025–26 season into February 2026.
This disruption had serious financial implications for clubs across the league. Kerala Blasters were no exception. Without matchday revenue for several months, the club was compelled to reassess operational expenses including stadium rental costs.

At one stage, relocating from Kochi was a genuine consideration. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium rental fee, reportedly between ₹8.75–10 lakh per match, was significantly higher than alternative venues such as Kozhikode’s EMS Corporation Stadium. Financial prudence demanded evaluation.
However, infrastructure realities changed the equation.
Why Kochi Remains the Logical Choice
Although Kozhikode offered a lower matchday rental structure, the pitch condition at EMS Corporation Stadium was deemed unsuitable for ISL-level football following non-football events that damaged the surface. Restoration costs and timeline uncertainty made the move impractical.

Meanwhile, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi underwent extensive upgrades. The renovation work, estimated at around ₹70 crore and executed through Sports Kerala Foundation initiatives, modernised key aspects of the venue:
- Upgraded floodlight electrical systems
- Refurbished seating across major sections
- Improved fire safety infrastructure
- Renovated public amenities
- Pitch resurfacing and technical compliance upgrades
These improvements ensured that Kochi met FIFA standards and ISL broadcast requirements. Operational stability and readiness ultimately outweighed the marginal cost savings of relocation.
For Kerala Blasters, the stadium is more than a venue. It is their fortress.
The Importance of Fan Identity
The Blasters boast one of the most passionate fan bases in Indian football. The Manjappada, widely recognised as one of Asia’s largest supporters’ groups, has turned Kochi into one of the most intimidating home environments in the league.
Relocating away from Kochi would not simply have been a logistical adjustment it would have risked diluting the club’s identity. ISL attendance figures historically place Kerala among the league leaders, and matchday atmosphere is a competitive advantage. While tensions between sections of supporters and management have surfaced in recent seasons including criticism over performance consistency and administrative transparency the emotional connection between the club and Kochi remains intact.
Retaining the stadium is therefore both a footballing and symbolic decision.
Tactical Reset for a Shortened Season
The 2025–26 ISL season is set to begin on February 14, 2026, in a compressed calendar format. Kerala Blasters will open their campaign away against Mohun Bagan Super Giant before returning to Kochi for their first home match on February 22 against Mumbai City FC. The five-month delay forced the club into strategic recalibration. High-profile foreign players were loaned out temporarily to manage finances, while the recruitment model shifted towards short-term and cost-efficient signings.
Experienced Indian midfielder Rowllin Borges was brought in to provide leadership stability, while select foreign additions were signed on structured contracts aligned with the shortened season timeline.
The emphasis is clear: financial prudence, tactical cohesion and immediate results.
Digital-First Ticketing and Matchday Operations
The upcoming season also marks Kerala Blasters’ transition to a fully paperless ticketing system. E-ticket QR codes will be mandatory for entry, reflecting a league-wide push toward digital infrastructure modernisation. Ticket pricing remains tiered, ranging from ₹199 in gallery sections to premium hospitality categories exceeding ₹1,250. The club continues partnerships with digital ticketing platforms to streamline entry and crowd management.
With the ISL season heavily compressed, maximizing attendance and operational efficiency at home fixtures will be crucial to revenue recovery.
Beyond the Messi Dream
The off-season narrative in Kerala was dominated by the proposed visit of Argentina’s national team and Lionel Messi, which ultimately did not materialise due to FIFA scheduling and certification complexities. While the cancellation disappointed fans, the stadium upgrades executed in preparation for that potential event have now directly benefited the Blasters. The long-term infrastructure gains remain, even if the marquee friendly did not happen.
A Defining Season Ahead
Kerala Blasters failed to qualify for the playoffs in the 2024–25 campaign. The 2025–26 season offers an opportunity for recalibration both competitively and institutionally.
Playing at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium provides familiarity, fan support and structural stability. What remains is performance consistency. For head coach David Català, the challenge is to build tactical cohesion quickly in a shortened league. For management, rebuilding trust with supporters is equally important.
For the fans, however, one thing is clear: ISL football returns to Kochi.
And in Kaloor, the Yellow Army will be waiting.
