The Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) reinforced its status as one of India’s most progressive sporting bodies by successfully hosting the fifth edition of the L&T Mumbai Open 2026, a prestigious WTA 125 tournament.
Staged to global standards and witnessed by packed stands during the closing stages, the event reflected MSLTA’s sustained commitment to building a robust and internationally competitive tennis ecosystem in India. The week-long tournament brought together an impressive mix of established international players and emerging Indian talent. The level of competition, combined with strong spectator engagement, underlined the growing stature of the Mumbai Open on the global calendar. The finals drew significant crowds, signaling the increasing appetite for high-quality women’s tennis in the country.
Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew claimed the singles title this year, improving upon her runner-up finish in the previous edition. Following her victory, she praised the organisers and the facilities provided. “The hospitality here has been excellent. MSLTA makes sure everything is taken care of, from practice courts to travel and accommodation. Especially the people here are so nice and welcoming. I am definitely coming here again next year to play the L&T Mumbai Open,” she said.
Building a Global Platform for Indian Players
The L&T Mumbai Open forms a critical component of MSLTA’s long-term vision to provide Indian players with consistent international exposure on home soil. As the only WTA 125 tournament in India, it offers Indian athletes a rare opportunity to compete for valuable WTA ranking points without the logistical and financial challenges of travelling abroad.

Each year, MSLTA allocates approximately ₹3.5 crores toward hosting major international tournaments, including ATP Challenger and WTA 125 events. These competitions attract top-ranked players from across the world, raising the competitive standard and enabling Indian players to test themselves against higher-ranked opposition.
Beyond the flagship Mumbai event, MSLTA funds a strong calendar of international tournaments across Maharashtra, with an annual outlay of nearly ₹2 crores. The association currently hosts six ITF events for men and women, an ITF Junior J100 event, and Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) Tour events across multiple districts. This decentralised approach ensures that players from different regions of the state gain access to international-standard competition, while also fostering local engagement with the sport.

A significant element of MSLTA’s developmental strategy lies in the strategic allocation of wild cards at international tournaments. By granting Indian players direct entry into main draws and qualifying rounds, the association accelerates their professional growth. These opportunities allow players to gain ranking points and exposure against superior competition, an essential step in transitioning from national to global circuits.
Strengthening Domestic and Grassroots Pathways
At the national level, MSLTA has built a strong domestic competitive structure by supporting district associations and affiliated clubs financially and administratively. Maharashtra remains home to three of India’s most prestigious junior National tournaments, hosted annually in Mumbai, Kolhapur, and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. These events serve as critical stepping stones for young players aspiring to move onto international platforms.
Through its wide network of clubs and gymkhanas, MSLTA also conducts AITA-recognised Championship Series, Super Series, National Series, and senior men’s and women’s tournaments. This continuous competitive calendar ensures that players across age groups remain match-ready throughout the year.
Grassroots development remains central to MSLTA’s philosophy. The association conducts more than 20 Maharashtra State Ranking Tournaments exclusively for Under-10 players annually across major A, B, and C cities. This structured circuit is complemented by regular ranking updates and specialised training camps where young players are monitored physically and mentally by experts.
The early integration of sports science, nutrition guidance, fitness conditioning, and mental toughness training reflects a modern approach to player development. Rather than focusing solely on competition results, MSLTA aims to create well-rounded athletes prepared for the demands of professional tennis.
Vision for the Future
MSLTA President Prashant Sutar highlighted the broader ambition behind hosting marquee events. “The successful hosting of the L&T Mumbai Open once again reflects MSLTA’s commitment to building a sustainable and competitive tennis ecosystem. Over the years, we have focused on creating world-class platforms for players at every level and we will continue to invest in international tournaments and long-term initiatives.
With the consistent success of the Mumbai Open, our ambition now is to take the next step and bring a WTA 250 tournament to Mumbai, which would further strengthen our presence on the global tennis calendar and provide greater opportunities for our players at home.”
MLSTA Secretary Sunder Iyer echoed similar sentiments, emphasising infrastructure upgrades and long-term planning. He noted that alongside expanding international exposure for Indian players, the association has invested significantly in improving facilities at the MSLTA venue. The aim is to transform the complex into a premier international tennis hub capable of hosting larger global events in the future.
With its structured grassroots system, robust domestic calendar, strategic international hosting, and ambitious vision, MSLTA continues to raise the bar for Indian tennis. The success of the L&T Mumbai Open 2026 is not merely an isolated achievement it is part of a larger, carefully designed pathway to position India as a consistent presence on the global tennis stage.
