JSW Soorma Hockey Club finally opened their account in the Hero Hockey India League (Men’s) 2026 with a composed and authoritative 3–1 win over HIL GC at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi on Thursday.

Led from the front by captain Harmanpreet Singh, who scored twice, Soorma delivered a performance that combined tactical discipline with clinical finishing to secure a much-needed first victory of the season.

Having endured a difficult start to the campaign, Soorma entered the contest knowing there was little margin for error. That urgency was evident from the opening exchanges, as they controlled possession and applied early pressure in the attacking third. Their intent paid off right at the end of the first quarter when they earned a penalty corner with just 33 seconds left on the clock. With Harmanpreet Singh standing over the ball, the outcome felt almost inevitable. The world-renowned drag-flicker unleashed a powerful effort that found the back of the net, giving Soorma a deserved 1–0 lead at the first break.

HIL GC attempted to respond in the second quarter, with captain Hardik Singh leading the charge. Quick transitions and sharp movement in midfield allowed GC to create a few half-chances, but Soorma’s defensive structure held firm. The backline remained compact, cutting off passing lanes and preventing any clear shooting opportunities. While GC searched for an equalizer, it was Soorma who struck again to double their advantage.

In the 27th minute, Gurjant Singh produced a moment of individual brilliance. Collecting the ball on the left flank, he drove aggressively into the circle, showcasing pace, control, and composure. Gurjant finished with a trademark strike that beat goalkeeper James Mazarelo cleanly, making it 2–0 and firmly swinging momentum in Soorma’s favor. The goal visibly rattled HIL GC, who began to show signs of frustration as the half drew to a close.

That pressure boiled over just before halftime when star scorer Kane Russell was shown a green card in the 30th minute following a hard tackle. The temporary suspension meant HIL GC was forced to start the third quarter with only ten players, a disadvantage that Soorma exploited ruthlessly. The numerical superiority allowed Soorma to dominate possession and push higher up the pitch, pinning GC inside their defensive half.

The decisive moment of the match arrived in the 38th minute, when Soorma earned another penalty corner. Once again, Harmanpreet Singh stepped up, delivering a perfectly executed drag-flick to score his second goal of the night and extend the lead to 3–0. The brace underlined his importance to the team, not just as a leader but as a reliable source of goals in pressure situations.

To their credit, HIL GC did not fold. They managed to pull one back in the 44th minute through Kane Russell, who converted a penalty corner to register his 10th goal of the league, drawing level with Tom Boon at the top of the scoring charts. However, the goal came too late to significantly alter the momentum of the contest.

The final quarter saw GC attempt to mount a comeback, creating a handful of chances and testing the Soorma defense. Yet Soorma remained composed, managing the game intelligently and ensuring there were no late scares. Their overall dominance was reflected in the statistics: 27 circle penetrations and seven shots on goal for Soorma compared to 19 circle entries and four shots for HIL GC.

Despite the defeat, HIL GC continues to remain in the top two of the points table, while the win provides a crucial boost for JSW Soorma Hockey Club as they look to build momentum in the league. Named Player of the Match, Gurjant Singh emphasized the importance of the result, calling it a must-win encounter and praising the collective effort.

With confidence restored, Soorma will hope this performance marks a turning point in their campaign as the league progresses.
