As the fourth edition of the Women’s Premier League gets underway, Delhi Capitals once again find themselves among the title contenders, armed with experience, stability, and a renewed sense of purpose.

The JSW-GMR co-owned franchise will begin their WPL 2026 campaign with a high-profile clash against defending champions Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium on Saturday, a fixture that has quickly developed into one of the league’s marquee rivalries. For Delhi Capitals, the opening match is more than just the first step of a new season. It represents another opportunity to translate consistency into silverware. Having reached the final in all three previous editions of the WPL, the Capitals have set a benchmark for sustained excellence, even as the ultimate title has narrowly eluded them.

Head Coach Jonathan Batty believes the groundwork laid over the past few weeks has put the team in a strong position to begin the campaign on the right note.

“We’ve got a lot of familiar faces back in the squad from the last few years, which is really nice,” Batty said on the eve of the opener. “At the same time, it’s been great to bring in some fresh faces who add a new dynamic to the team.”

That blend of continuity and renewal has been central to Delhi Capitals’ strategy ahead of WPL 2026. The franchise retained a solid core at the auction, ensuring leadership, match awareness, and tactical clarity remained intact. Alongside that, targeted recruitment has added depth and flexibility, particularly in areas that could prove decisive over a long tournament.

Preparation has been a key focus, with the team assembling early for an intensive pre-season camp in Goa. Batty described the camp as both productive and energizing, allowing the players to reconnect while also sharpening their skills.

“It’s been a fantastic preparation period,” he said. “The camp in Goa allowed us to combine team-building activities with high-quality training sessions. There’s been some really good cricket on display, and as we head into the tournament phase, everything feels really positive.” For Batty, who has been at the helm of Delhi Capitals’ women’s team since the inception of the WPL, the emphasis has always been on creating an environment where performance and enjoyment coexist. He believes that approach has been instrumental in the team’s consistent success across seasons.

“Team culture is about having good people around the environment,” Batty explained. “That includes players, backroom staff, and also the support, logistics, and marketing teams. There are a lot of high-quality people within the Delhi Capitals organization, and it’s about striking the right balance between working hard, having fun, and spending time together.”

That culture, he feels, becomes especially important during high-pressure moments something Delhi Capitals have experienced plenty of, given their repeated appearances in finals. While the team has fallen just short of the title in previous editions, Batty sees those campaigns not as setbacks, but as building blocks.

“We’ve got a really balanced squad,” he said. “What excites me is building on the experience and quality we retained going into the auction, complemented by some high-quality recruitment. We’re obviously looking to go one better than in the last few years.” The opening match against the Mumbai Indians presents an immediate test of the Delhi Capitals’ readiness. Mumbai, as defending champions, carry both confidence and expectation, while the DY Patil Stadium has often produced high-scoring, competitive encounters. Batty acknowledged the challenge but stressed that the focus remains firmly on execution rather than opposition.

“It’s the first game of the tournament, and there’s always excitement around that,” he said. “We’re prepared, we know what we want to do, and the players are in a good space mentally and physically.”

Whether this season finally delivers the elusive title remains to be seen, but as Batty summed it up succinctly, the Capitals are “raring to go” and Saturday’s clash against the Mumbai Indians will offer the first indication of how far that readiness can take them.
