Even though it has gotten better over time, people still say it’s like the Indian Premier League (IPL). The IPL is India’s most popular sports league in terms of money and culture. That makes me think: can the ISL go the same way?

More and more people are watching the ISL on TV and online. In its first few seasons, the league had over 200 million viewers. That’s a lot for a football tournament in a country where cricket is the most popular sport. The league has grown every year because the shows are better, there are more ways to watch them online, and more people are talking about them on social media. A lot of people have watched videos on a lot of different platforms over the past few seasons. This shows that a lot of people, especially younger ones, are interested.

Putting it next to the IPL shows how much bigger it is. More than 500 million people watch the IPL every season. More than 150 million people watch the finals alone. Digital platforms can get hundreds of millions of views for one IPL match. The ISL is growing, but it still doesn’t reach many people.
Stadium Attendance and Matchday Experience
A lot of people liked the ISL in its first few years. There were about 25,000 people at each game. Even now, some clubs still have a lot of fans. Kerala Blasters, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and Bengaluru FC are some of the teams with the most fans. There have been games and finals with crowds of more than 50,000 people that got a lot of press.

Even though these things are good, it’s still hard to get people to come to all the events. Over the last few seasons, about 10,000 to 12,000 people came to each game. This means that more people are getting involved, but the core fans are still loyal. On the other hand, every IPL city always has full stadiums, no matter what stage of the league it is in or how well the teams are playing. The ISL and IPL are very different when it comes to money. The IPL is one of the most valuable sports leagues in the world, with a brand value of more than $10 billion.
The system is strong enough to stand on its own because of big broadcasting and sponsorship deals and rising franchise values. Central revenue sharing gives each IPL team hundreds of crores every year. The ISL is doing better in business, but it only works on a small scale. Over the years, sponsors have given more and more money. Now, they give more than ₹300 crore a year. But a lot of clubs still need their owners to give them money. The ISL teams don’t get a lot of money from the central government, so they can’t spend a lot on having a big squad, marketing, and building things.
Because of this financial imbalance, the league has a hard time growing and staying stable over time.
Contribution to Player Development
In some ways, the ISL has definitely helped Indian players get better. The league gives players from the country a lot of chances to play professionally, where they can train and compete with players from other countries who have been doing it for a long time. Many Indian players have become key members of the national team because they play in the ISL all the time.
The IPL is a great example of how Indian cricket has changed over the years. It changed how people look for talent, set fitness goals, and get to know the competition. The ISL hasn’t changed much yet, but it has made Indian soccer players better and more diverse. Cricket is more than just a sport in India; it’s a part of the culture. For a long time, cricket has been a big part of Indian life. People play it in their neighborhoods, on the streets, and at school. The IPL used this fame to become even more famous.
There are a lot of local football fans in states like Kerala, West Bengal, Goa, and the Northeast, but not a lot of national fans. The ISL has to compete with other sports leagues, cricket, and international football tournaments for fans.

Some issues with the ISL’s structure need to be fixed so that it is more like the IPL. To close the gap between owners, financial stability needs to get better. We need to make the youth and grassroots football systems better so that they can keep getting new players. Fans should do more than just watch football, and planning for the long term should come before planning for the short term. The ISL may not make as much money or have as many viewers as the IPL, but that doesn’t mean it can’t do well. The league is getting better because more people are watching it, the players are getting better, and the fans are getting better.
The ISL should not try to be like the IPL. Instead, it should focus on building a strong, long-lasting football community.
If the league keeps going this way, it could become the most important thing in Indian football.
