PVL 2025: Kolkata Thunderbolts Coach Naser Shahnazi Praises League’s ‘Exciting’ Format, Calls Ashwal Rai the ‘Perfect Captain’

As the RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia returns for its much-anticipated fourth season, excitement is running high across teams and fans alike. Among the most watched sides this year are the Kolkata Thunderbolts, and their head coach, Naser Shahnazi, believes the 2025 edition will be one of the most competitive yet.

The Iranian coach, who is in his first year at the helm, spoke ahead of Kolkata’s season opener, praising the league’s distinctive format, the professionalism of his club, and the leadership qualities of captain Ashwal Rai, whom he described as the “perfect leader” for the team’s ambitions.

“The Short Duration Makes It Exciting”

Having previously coached in Iran’s professional leagues and worked with national programs, Shahnazi brings a wealth of international experience. But even he admits that India’s Prime Volleyball League stands out for its format and intensity.

“The first difference between the Prime Volleyball League and other leagues in the world is that the duration is short only one month,” he said. “This short time makes the league more exciting. The players and teams are all pumped up and want to achieve the championship in that limited time, which is good.”

The condensed schedule 25 matches spread over just three weeks creates a unique challenge. Unlike traditional volleyball seasons that stretch across several months, PVL’s high-intensity format demands players to peak early, maintain consistency, and adapt rapidly to changing opponents.

Shahnazi sees this as a blessing for both athletes and fans. “When matches happen almost every day, there’s no time to relax. The atmosphere stays electric, and fans stay connected. It’s great for the sport,” he said.

Ashwal Rai: The Heart of Kolkata Thunderbolts

If the coach’s philosophy is about clarity and composure, then captain Ashwal Rai is the embodiment of that on court. A stalwart of Indian volleyball and a cornerstone of the Thunderbolts setup, Ashwal has transitioned this season from middle blocker to opposite, a tactical move designed to leverage his versatility and attacking strength.

“I’m happy that my captain, Ashwal, has all the right characteristics,” Shahnazi said. “He manages the team very well and maintains good communication between the coaching staff and players. He has a strong personality, a deep understanding of volleyball, and great leadership skills.”

On the positional change, Shahnazi added: “He has shifted from middle to opposite this season. It’s not an easy switch, but I’m confident he will do his best in this new role and lead us to the trophy.”

The coach’s confidence in Ashwal is rooted not only in his skills but also in his temperament. Known for his calm under pressure, Ashwal has led Kolkata to two playoff appearances in previous editions and is widely regarded as one of the finest readers of the game in Indian volleyball.

Developing India’s Next Generation

Beyond chasing silverware, Shahnazi’s approach centers on developing India’s emerging volleyball talent. The Iranian tactician, who has previously worked on youth development programs in Asia, believes the Prime Volleyball League serves as a vital platform for Indian players to gain exposure to international standards of play.

“I’m very happy to work with these young, talented players,” he said. “They are full of energy and eager to learn. Their energy gives us energy to work harder as coaches. I hope to teach them good things good techniques so that in the future they can do great things for their national team.”

Under his watch, Kolkata has assembled a squad blending experienced campaigners with promising youngsters. Alongside veterans like Ashwal and setter Anirudh Dahiya, the roster includes rising names such as Sudheer Shetty and Abhishek Minhas, who are expected to gain valuable match experience this season.

Shahnazi views PVL’s format as a learning accelerator for Indian players. “In one month, players face opponents from several countries, each with different playing styles. That’s the kind of exposure no training camp can replicate,” he noted.

A Seamless Start for the Iranian Coach

Despite this being his debut season in India, Shahnazi has quickly settled in. He praised the Thunderbolts’ management for providing world-class facilities and a professional environment factors he believes are essential for player performance.

“I have to say thank you to our club. This is my first year in India, but the management has provided everything facilities, hotel, training camp, logistics. Everything is perfect,” he said. “The players are talented, disciplined, and respectful. They understand the technical and tactical sides of volleyball, and that makes coaching a pleasure.”

The Thunderbolts, owned by Kolkata Sports Ventures, have established a reputation for professionalism and consistency in the PVL since winning the inaugural edition in 2022. The franchise’s structured approach, combining analytics with player welfare, has made it one of the league’s benchmark teams.

Kolkata Thunderbolts begin their 2025 campaign on Sunday, October 5, against Bengaluru Torpedoes at Hyderabad’s Gachibowli Indoor Stadium a clash that already has fans buzzing. The Torpedoes come in with momentum after winning a five-set thriller against Goa Guardians on opening night, while Kolkata will aim to make a statement in their season debut.

Shahnazi expects nothing less than a tough contest. “Every team is strong. There are no easy matches in this league. But we are ready. The players have trained well, and the spirit in the camp is excellent,” he said confidently.

The RR Kabel Prime Volleyball League powered by Scapia continues to grow in stature with each edition. Its mix of world-class players, fast-paced format, and televised coverage on Sony Sports Network and PVL’s official YouTube channel has brought volleyball back into India’s sporting mainstream.

For Shahnazi, though, the essence of the league lies in its energy.

“This league is full of life,” he said. “You can feel it in the gym, in the matches, in the fans. It’s fast, exciting, and full of surprises just the way volleyball should be.”

With a new coach, an experienced leader, and a balanced squad, the Kolkata Thunderbolts enter PVL 2025 not just as contenders, but as torchbearers of a league that’s redefining Indian volleyball.
