The 17th Wushu World Championships in Brazil proved to be a historic outing for the Indian contingent, as the team returned home with four medals three silvers in women’s sanda and a bronze in the men’s division.

While the elusive gold medal remained out of reach, the performances of Aparna, Kareena Kaushik, Shivani, and Sagar Dahiya underlined India’s growing stature in the global wushu circuit. In the men’s 56kg sanda category, Sagar Dahiya battled his way to the semifinals, where he eventually went down 0–2 to his opponent from the Philippines. Both rounds were tightly contested, decided on fine margins that could have swung either way. Despite the narrow loss, Sagar’s journey to the last four was a testament to his skill, determination, and ability to compete against the very best in the world.

The bronze marks an important milestone for the men’s squad, which has often faced an uphill climb at the world level. Sagar’s medal also brings encouragement for younger athletes in the 56kg division, showing that podium finishes at the global stage are very much achievable.

A Silver-Laden Day for India’s Women

If Sagar’s bronze set the tone, India’s women sanda athletes took the narrative further by storming into three finals, securing a hat-trick of silver medals on the same day.

  • Aparna (52kg) put up a spirited fight against Vietnam in the gold medal match. She began with confidence, using her agility and quick combinations to trouble her opponent. However, the Vietnamese athlete’s counterattacks in the decisive moments saw Aparna settle for silver.
  • Kareena Kaushik (60kg) had the daunting task of facing a Chinese opponent representing the country considered the traditional powerhouse of wushu. Kareena, who has been steadily rising through the national ranks, held her ground and showcased her resilience, but eventually fell short, bowing out in straight rounds. Even in defeat, her effort highlighted India’s ability to challenge the sport’s giants.
  • Shivani (75kg) faced perhaps the toughest challenge of all: going up against the reigning World Champion from Iran. Known for her strength and tactical acumen, the Iranian controlled the match from the outset. Shivani, however, fought with grit, forcing her opponent to dig deep for every point. Though she had to be content with silver, the BSF athlete’s run to the final was one of the standout stories of India’s campaign.

For India to have three women contesting for world titles on the same day reflects not just depth but also the progress women’s wushu has made in recent years.

Near Misses and Strong Performances

Beyond the medalists, India’s contingent had other notable performers. Vikrant Baliyan in the men’s 75kg sanda reached the quarterfinals. His performance, however, showed consistency and competitive spirit. Together, these results underline the collective strength of this squad.

Significance of the Medals

India’s four-medal haul at the 2025 World Championships is significant for several reasons.

  1. Consistency at the World Level : In past editions, Indian athletes have sporadically broken through to medal rounds. This time, with four podium finishes including three in finals, the team displayed consistency across categories.
  2. Rise of Women’s Wushu : The fact that India’s women brought home three silvers shows the program’s rapid growth. It signals that with more exposure and international training, gold may not be far away.
  3. Breaking Barriers in Men’s Sanda : Sagar’s bronze is crucial in motivating the men’s side, often overshadowed by stronger global competitors. His performance may well inspire a new wave of athletes in the lighter categories.
  4. Momentum for the Future : These results provide momentum ahead of upcoming Asian Championships and future world events. With wushu being increasingly recognized in multi-sport competitions, India’s standing becomes even more relevant.

While the celebrations are justified, the takeaway from Brazil is also clear: India is on the brink of a breakthrough. The silvers show the athletes’ ability to reach the final stage, but also highlight the fine margins that separate them from gold.

To bridge this gap, experts suggest three key areas of focus:

  • Enhanced International Exposure: Regular competition against Chinese, Iranian, and Southeast Asian opponents is vital to acclimatize athletes to top-level intensity.
  • Sports Science and Recovery: Wushu, being physically demanding, requires investment in strength conditioning, injury prevention, and recovery support systems.
  • Grassroots Development: With wushu gaining popularity in states like Manipur, Haryana, and Delhi, a structured pipeline could ensure consistent talent supply.

For now, though, the four medals in Brazil represent a proud chapter in India’s wushu journey. The sight of Aparna, Kareena, Shivani, and Sagar standing on the podium, holding the tricolour, is symbolic of the sport’s growth in the country. From being an underdog discipline to now producing world-level medalists across multiple weight categories, India’s progress has been commendable. The next step is clear: to turn those silvers into golds.
