Indian Stars Shine Bright as US Hosts Its First-Ever Table Tennis US Grand Smash

The world of table tennis has officially arrived in the United States in grand fashion, with the inaugural US Grand Smash kicking off in Los Angeles. As one of the four premier events on the ITTF calendar, the Grand Smash is equivalent in stature to a tennis Grand Slam featuring the world’s top talent, intense rivalries, and valuable ranking points.

For Indian paddlers, it’s been a mixed bag of results in the opening rounds, but there were notable wins and moments of high-quality play that reflect the country’s growing stature on the global table tennis stage.

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran Sets Up Clash With World No. 10 Peng Xiang

In a highly anticipated all-Indian Round of 64 clash, veteran Sathiyan Gnanasekaran got the better of Manav Thakkar, winning 3-1 in an intense match that tested both players’ reflexes and tactical awareness.

The experienced Sathiyan showed composure in key moments, particularly in the third and fourth games, to close out the match and advance to the Round of 32. He now faces a daunting test in World No. 10 Xiang Peng of China, a rising star in world table tennis known for his explosive forehand and agility at the table.

Peng, seeded in the top bracket, will be a formidable opponent, but Sathiyan’s ability to mix up rhythm and rely on his deceptive serves could give him a fighting chance.

Sreeja Akula Impresses With Straight-Game Win

In the women’s singles draw, Sreeja Akula continued her fine form with a dominant 3-0 victory over Chien Tung-Chuan of Chinese Taipei. The Indian paddler didn’t allow her opponent to settle at any point, displaying sharp footwork, strong blocks, and rapid counters to cruise into the Round of 32.

Sreeja will now face a significant step up in competition as she takes on World No. 15 Hina Hayata Hashimoto of Japan. The Japanese left-hander is a former Grand Smash semifinalist and known for her aggressive topspin play. But Sreeja, currently in the best phase of her international career, has shown the ability to raise her game against higher-ranked opponents. This match promises to be a fascinating contest of control versus power.

Early Exits for Manika and Yashaswini, But Signs of Promise

It was a disappointing result for Manika Batra, India’s top-ranked women’s singles player, who crashed out in the opening round. The World No. 39 couldn’t find her rhythm and was knocked out in straight games a result that continues her patchy run in 2025.

However, there were positives to take from Yashaswini Ghorpade’s spirited performance. Up against World No. 6 Tomokazu Harimoto a top Japanese male star Yashaswini managed to stretch her opponent and showed no signs of stage fright. Though she eventually lost in four games (1-3), her resilience and ability to compete against a top-10 player earned praise from the coaching staff and international commentators alike.

Women’s Doubles: Diya/Yashaswini Fall in Round of 32

In women’s doubles, the young Indian pair of Diya Chitale and Yashaswini Ghorpade put up a decent effort but were beaten 1-3 in the Round of 32. Facing a more experienced and higher-ranked duo, Diya and Yashaswini fought hard, especially in the second game, but couldn’t maintain the pressure across the match.

Despite the early exit, the duo has shown signs of becoming a solid pair for the future. Their coordination, understanding, and aggressive returns were impressive, especially considering the strength of the competition at a Grand Smash event.

India’s Footprint at the Grandest Stage

This edition of the Grand Smash is historic not just because it’s the first of its kind in the United States, but also because it signifies how global the sport of table tennis has become. With packed stands in Los Angeles and a fan-friendly format, the US Grand Smash is expected to be a game-changer in bringing the sport closer to newer audiences.

For India, participation in such high-profile tournaments is invaluable. Matches against world-class opposition, exposure to high-pressure environments, and visibility on global platforms all contribute to the nation’s steady rise in table tennis.

Indian paddlers like Sathiyan, Sreeja, and Yashaswini are not just participating they’re competing. And in matches against top-15 and even top-10 players, they’re showing that they belong.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Sathiyan and Sreeja as they take on top-ranked opponents in their respective Round of 32 matches. Wins in those encounters would mark a watershed moment for Indian table tennis especially at a Grand Smash event.
