Indo-American duo storms into pre-quarterfinals with straight-sets win at Wimbledon

Indian tennis found a reason to cheer at the hallowed lawns of the All England Club as Yuki Bhambri, partnering Robert Galloway of the USA, entered the Round of 16 (pre-quarterfinals) at Wimbledon 2025 in the Gentlemen’s Doubles category. The Indo-American 16th seeds got the better of Portugal’s Nuno Borges and USA’s Marcos Giron 6-3, 7-6(6) in a clinical second-round win, continuing their impressive Grand Slam form.

This is Yuki Bhambri’s first-ever appearance in the third round of the men’s doubles at Wimbledon, and with this feat, he has now reached the third round in all four Grand Slams in men’s doubles — an important personal milestone for the Delhi-based pro, who has consistently reinvented himself in the doubles circuit.

Strong Start, Gritty Finish

The 16th-seeded pair came out sharp from the beginning. After a brief exchange of service holds, the Indo-American duo saved three crucial break points at 3-3, 0-40 a turning point that seemed to unlock their rhythm. They broke Borges and Giron soon after and closed out the first set 6-3 with composed service games and net dominance.

The second set, however, turned into a battle of nerves. Bhambri and Galloway were staring down the barrel at 2-5 but showcased tremendous resilience to claw their way back. They pushed the set into a tiebreaker and edged it out 8-6, sealing the win in straight sets after 1 hour and 35 minutes on Court 12.

Career Milestone for Bhambri

For Yuki Bhambri, this Wimbledon run marks a significant chapter in his doubles career. A former junior World No. 1 and Australian Open boys’ singles champion, Bhambri’s transition to doubles has seen a steady upward trajectory over the past two seasons.

Having already made the third round in men’s doubles at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open, Wimbledon remained the last piece of the puzzle. The 2025 edition of the Championships now sees him complete that set, adding further credibility to his growing reputation as a Grand Slam doubles contender.

Big Test Awaits: 4th Seeds Next

Bhambri and Galloway now face their biggest challenge yet in the form of the 4th seeds Marcel Granollers (Spain) and Horacio Zeballos (Argentina). The veteran pair, both former World No. 1s in doubles and two-time Grand Slam finalists, are known for their tactical variety and grass-court experience.

Granollers and Zeballos ousted India’s N. Balaji and Mexico’s Miguel Ángel Reyes-Varela in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) in their Round 2 clash. For Bhambri-Galloway, it will be a match that tests their synergy and ability to absorb pressure, especially on the faster courts of Wimbledon.

India’s Lone Survivors

With this win, Bhambri and Galloway remain the only Indo representation left in the men’s doubles draw. The other Indian duos bowed out in Round 2:

  • N. Sriram Balaji and Reyes-Varela fell to Granollers/Zeballos
  • Rithvik Bollipalli and Colombia’s Nicolas Barrientos also suffered a second-round exit

With Rohan Bopanna, India’s top-ranked doubles player, skipping this edition, the spotlight firmly rests on Bhambri. His performance so far has been a timely boost to Indian tennis at the majors, especially with younger players looking up to him for inspiration.

Partnership With Galloway Clicking Well

The Bhambri-Galloway pairing has started to develop into a reliable unit on the ATP Tour. Their complementary styles Bhambri’s baseline solidity and left-handed returns matched with Galloway’s strong serving and net skills have served them well on faster courts.

They have previously registered good results at ATP 250 and 500 level events, and their seeding at Wimbledon 2025 (16th) was a reflection of that consistency. With grass court tennis being heavily serve-dependent, the duo’s ability to protect their own service games will be crucial moving forward.

All eyes will now be on their Round 3 clash with Granollers/Zeballos, likely to be scheduled on one of the show courts. It will be a true test of Bhambri and Galloway’s Grand Slam ambitions. A win would place them in the quarterfinals, an unprecedented achievement for Bhambri at Wimbledon.

For Indian fans, Bhambri’s success has provided a much-needed silver lining after early exits across categories this year. Wimbledon 2025 may just be remembered for a deep doubles run, spearheaded by one of India’s most resilient tennis professionals.
