Women’s tennis has long been at the forefront of progress in sports, setting new standards for equality and opportunity.
Now, with the launch of the PIF WTA Maternity Fund, the sport is taking another historic step forward.
This first-of-its-kind initiative, supported by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and championed by the WTA Players’ Council, provides comprehensive maternity benefits and fertility treatments for WTA athletes.
It marks the first time in women’s sports history that independent, self-employed athletes will have access to structured maternity leave.
Revolutionizing Support for Women Athletes
Professional tennis players, unlike athletes in team sports, are independent contractors who manage their careers without the backing of a club or league. This means they do not receive traditional employment benefits, including paid maternity leave. Until now, female players had to navigate pregnancy and postpartum recovery without a clear support system, often risking their rankings and income.
With the PIF WTA Maternity Fund, eligible WTA players can now receive up to 12 months of paid maternity leave, allowing them to focus on their health, family, and future in the sport. WTA CEO Portia Archer emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating:
“Independent contractors and self-employed individuals don’t typically have these kinds of maternity benefits provided and available to them. They have to go out and sort of figure out those benefits for themselves. This is really sort of novel and groundbreaking.”
This initiative not only eases financial pressures but also provides fertility treatment options, enabling players to plan their families without compromising their professional aspirations.
Women’s Tennis Leading the Way
Labelled by the WTA as “groundbreaking”, this initiative will benefit over 320 female athletes, including the 25 active mothers currently competing on the tour. It ensures that women in tennis no longer have to choose between their careers and motherhood.

This move aligns with the WTA’s long-standing commitment to gender equality. From equal prize money at Grand Slams to the fight for better working conditions, women’s tennis has consistently led the charge in advancing women’s rights in sports. The PIF WTA Maternity Fund continues this legacy by setting a precedent for other individual sports to follow.
A Defining Moment in Women’s Sports
The introduction of the PIF WTA Maternity Fund marks a historic moment, not just for tennis, but for all of women’s sports. It is the only maternity program in women’s sports to be fully funded and supported by an external partner, ensuring its sustainability and long-term impact.
This initiative acknowledges the unique challenges faced by female athletes and provides them with the necessary support to thrive both on and off the court. It empowers them with the flexibility to pursue professional careers while building their families, proving that motherhood and athletic excellence can coexist.
With this bold step, women’s tennis continues to lead the way, inspiring other sports to follow suit. The WTA, backed by PIF, is not just making history—it is shaping the future of women’s sports.
