India’s Krishna Jayasankar has etched her name in the record books, setting a new Indian indoor record in women’s shot put at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships 2025 in Albuquerque, USA.

The 22-year-old produced a throw of 16.03 meters, securing a bronze medal and surpassing the previous Indian indoor record of 15.54 meters, held by Poornarao Rane since 2023.

With this historic performance, Krishna also became the first Indian woman to breach the 16-meter mark in indoor shot put, a major milestone for Indian athletics. Her achievement puts her in contention for the NCAA Indoor Championships, a prestigious collegiate competition in the USA.

A Breakthrough Performance on the Big Stage

Competing against a strong field, Krishna showed remarkable composure and determination. Heading into the final rounds, she was in fourth place but delivered her best throw of the competition in her last attempt to overtake Makayla Long and clinch the bronze medal.

The event was dominated by Mya Lesnar, daughter of WWE legend Brock Lesnar, who won the gold medal with a massive throw of 19.02 meters. Gabby Morris secured the silver medal with a distance of 17.09 meters.

Krishna’s previous personal best stood at 15.03 meters, which she recorded at the same venue just last month. Her rapid improvement within a short span signals her rising potential in the sport.

Breaking Barriers in Indian Shot Put

Shot put has seen significant growth in India, with women athletes consistently pushing boundaries. The Indian outdoor shot put record currently stands at 18.41 meters, set by Abha Khatua at the Federation Cup 2024. While Krishna still has a long way to go to reach that mark, her indoor achievement proves she is on the right path.

Krishna comes from a sporting background she is the daughter of former Indian basketball players Prasanna and Jayasankar Menon. Her strong athletic foundation has clearly played a role in her rise in shot put.

Chasing Bigger Goals NCAA Championships and Beyond

With her 16.03m throw, Krishna has also inched closer to a spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships, one of the most competitive platforms for college athletes in the USA. This will be another golden opportunity for her to test herself against the best.

On the global stage, the automatic qualification standard for the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2025, set to be held in Nanjing, China, from March 21-23, is 19.50 meters.

While Krishna still has a gap to bridge, she can also qualify through the World Athletics Top Performance List, which closes on March 12.

Her record-breaking feat in Albuquerque is a huge boost for Indian athletics, particularly in an event where Indian women have been striving to make a mark internationally.
