Indian women hockey put up a spirited performance against England in their latest FIH Pro League encounter, showcasing immense resilience to fight back from a goal down.

However, despite a commendable effort in regulation time, Harendra Singh’s side faltered in the shootout, losing a crucial bonus point.

The final score stood at 2(1)-2(2) in England’s favor, with India missing out on what seemed like a golden opportunity to claim an additional point.

A Fighting Display in Regulation Time

The Indian women’s team showed great character after trailing early in the match. Goals from Navneet Kaur and Rutaja Pisal helped India bounce back and level the scores, displaying their attacking intent and ability to capitalize on opportunities. The midfield controlled possession well, and the defense, led by captain and goalkeeper Savita Punia, held firm under pressure.

England, known for their structured play and counterattacking ability, had their fair share of chances, but India matched them step for step.

The game remained evenly poised, with both teams creating multiple scoring opportunities. By the end of regulation time, the scoreboard read 2-2, forcing the match into a shootout to determine the winner of the bonus point.

Shootout Woes Cost India Dearly

Despite their excellent fightback, India crumbled when it mattered the most. The shootout turned into a nightmare, with only Navneet Kaur converting her attempt, while most other penalty takers faltered under pressure.

Lalremsiami showed some promise but couldn’t deliver the finishing touch, while the rest of the Indian attackers looked nervous and lacked conviction.

On the other hand, England executed their shootout chances clinically, sealing the bonus point with composure.

Savita Punia, as always, gave her best effort in goal, making a few crucial saves, but she couldn’t single-handedly carry the team in the absence of strong finishing from the penalty takers.

A Missed Opportunity

This loss will sting for India, considering how well they played during regular time. The performance in open play was commendable, with strong midfield control, well-worked goals, and a determined defence.

However, failing in the shootout highlights a major area of concern that the team must address.

Harendra Singh and his coaching staff will need to work on penalty-taking skills, ensuring that such a situation doesn’t repeat itself in future matches. India had the bonus point in their grasp, only to let it slip away a disappointing end to what could have been a morale-boosting victory.
