The 2024 Chinese Taipei Open, held from December 6th to 8th in Taoyuan City, was an Indoor World Series event.
Jyothi Surekha Vennam claimed the Compound Women’s Gold at the tournament. India also had strong performances in the Recurve Men, Recurve Women, and Compound Men events, with several archers reaching key stages and securing podium finishes.
Compound Women’s Event: Jyothi Surekha Vennam Wins Gold
In the compound women’s category, Jyothi Surekha Vennam(1st), Purvasha Shende (6th), Aditi Swami (7th), Parneet Kaur (8th) qualified for the main event.
Jyothi had an outstanding run, defeating Parneet in the quarterfinals and then overcoming Chen Yi Hsuan of Taiwan in the semifinals.
In the final, she triumphed over Taiwan’s Yu-Ju Chen, winning 144-140 to capture the gold medal.
This victory marked a return to the top for Jyothi after her silver in 2023, solidifying her reputation as one of the world’s leading compound archers. It also marked her second consecutive Indoor World Series title, following her triumph at the GT Open in November.
Compound Men’s Event: Prathmesh Fuge Secures Bronze
In the Compound Men event, 14 Indian archers competed, with Abhishek Verma (2nd), Ojas Deotale (3rd), Prathmesh Fuge(11th), Rishabh Yadav (12th), Saurabh Pandey (22nd), Siddharth Dudhwal (27th), and Sunil Rana (32nd) making it to the main event.
Prathmesh Fuge was the highlight of the competition for India. After advancing to the semifinals, he was defeated but fought hard in the bronze medal match, overcoming Kim Jongho of South Korea 147-144 to claim the bronze.
While Abhishek Verma and Ojas Deotale made it to the quarterfinals, they were eliminated in the later rounds.
Recurve Men’s Event: Atul Verma’s Strong Run to Semifinals
In the Recurve Men event, India had nine archers competing. The ranking round saw Atul Verma (8th), Dhiraj Bommadevara(9th), Jayanta Talukdar (20th), Goldi Mishra (27th), Aditya Wadhwa (36th), Pratik Saha (44th), Krish Kumar (52nd), Dheeraj Malik (58th), and Sahil (64th) in action, with only the top 32 progressing to the main event.
Atul Verma, the standout performer, advanced to the quarterfinals after winning his first two rounds.
In the quarterfinals, he defeated Hae Jaewo of South Korea to make it to the semifinals but lost to Ku Bonchan, missing out on a place in the final. In a hard-fought bronze medal match, Atul was narrowly defeated by Lee Seungshin of South Korea (5-6), finishing 4th.
Recurve Women’s Event: Ankita Bhakat Wins Bronze
India’s Ankita Bhakat (4th), Simranjeet Kaur (10th), KomalikaBari (22nd), Bhajan Kaur (25th), Madhvi Chauhan (30th), Manjri (38th), and Vanshi Kadvani (39th) competed in the Recurve Women event, with Ankita and Simranjeet being the only two archers to progress beyond the first round.
Ankita had a standout performance, making it to the semifinals after defeating Kan Chaeyong of South Korea in the quarterfinals.
She lost to Eunah Lee, the top seed from Korea, in the semifinals but bounced back to win the bronze medal, defeating Lee Yunji of Korea 6-2.
