The DecoTurf hard outdoor courts at the MSLTA will see the second edition of the Mumbai Open as a WTA 125 event.

Defending champion Jill Teichmann won’t return to defend her title whereas 2024 champion Darja Semenistaja returns to the event after a first round defeat last year. The top two seeds for the event, Lulu Sun, and Semenistaja, are the only southpaws among all seeded players. India’s No.1 player Sahaja Yamlapalli has entered the main draw by virture of her ranking whereas Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, Vaidehi Chaudhari, Maaya Raajeshwaran Revathi, and Vaishnavi Adkar have received wildcards for their home event.

First Quarter: Shrivalli against Sun and Sawangkaew

Shrivalli lost in the quarterfinals last year against eventual champion Jill Teichmann. Ever since winning the ITF titles in Solapur and Navi Mumbai, the 24-year-old hasn’t quite made a mark on the singles circuit. She would want to capitalize on her first round match against World No.481 Kristiana Sidorova who defeated Zeel Desai and Yasmine Kabbaj in the qualifiers to make the main draw.
A win is likely to put her against ninth seed Tatiana Prozorova who won the ITF titles in New Delhi and Pune last year. In her first round match, the Russian will be challenged by Priska Nugroho, the Indonese player who won the 2020 girls’ doubles title at the Australian Open partnering Alexandra Eala.

Two strong contenders for the quarterfinals spot in this section are top seed Lulu Sun and Thai No.2 Mananchaya Sawangkaew. The latter was the runner-up in Mumbai Open last year. Sun on the other hand enters the season after winning the WTA 125 in Jingshan last year and a finalist at the WTA 250 in Guangzhou. The Kiwi will face qualifier Misaki Matsuda in the opening round, whose only ITF title was won in Bangalore. Sawangkaew will be up against Victoria Morvayova, who lost to Shrivalli in the qualifiers of the Mumbai Open in 2024.
Probable quarter-finals: Lulu Sun vs Tatiana Prozorova

Second Quarter: Uphill challenges for Vaidehi and Maaya

Leolia Jeanjean has had a modest start to her 2025 season. While she played at the United Cup, Australian Open main draw, and Manila, she didn’t win a single set. Since August 2025, the Frenchwoman has been floating on and around the Top 100 ranking. Last year, she had to retire in the first round of the Mumbai Open due to an injury. On her return to Mumbai, she will face young Vaidehi Chaudhari, who has won four ITF titles till date.

An upset over Jeanjean would mean that Vaidehi would play either Nicole Fossa Huergo or Miho Kuramochi in the second round. Fossa Huergo, top seed in the qualifying draw, got into the main draw as a lucky loser after sixth seed Polina Kudermetova was forced to pull out of the tournament due to illness. The Argentine lost to Maaya in the qualifiers of the Mumbai Open last year. Kuramochi hasn’t had any significant impact on tour since 2023, the year when she won both her singles ITF titles.

Thailand’s No.1 player Lanlana Tararudee is the fifth seed for the Mumbai Open and will face the promising Maaya Revathi in the opening round. Tararudee, who made her main draw debut at the Slams in the 2026 Australian Open, will be vary of Maaya’s previous year’s run in the tournament. The Indian had secured wins against Zarina Diyas, Iryna Shyamanovich, and Mei Yamaguchi to make the semifinals.
Park So-Hyun, who was the 2024 quarterfinalist at the Mumbai Open will face 18-year-old Brit, Mingge Xu, in the first round. The South Korean has had enough experience playing in India as two of her nine ITF titles were won in Ahmedabad and New Delhi.
Probable quarter-finals: Lanlana Tararudee vs Leolia Jeanjean

Third Quarter: A quarter of players from seven countries

Belgium’s Hanne Vandewinkel is the fourth seed for the event. The WTA 125 Abierto Tempico champion will face Poland’s World No.433 Zuzanna Pawlikowska in the first round. Rina Saigo and Tian Fangran will face each other for the fourth time. While Saigo leads the Chinese 2-1, their latest meeting held two weeks ago was won by Frangran, who is currently at a career-high ranking of World No.305.

Lucky loser Yasmine Kabbaj is 4-3 in singles so far this year. The Moroccan will face 33-year-old Thai qualifier Peangtarn Plipuech in the first round. Plipuech had previously lost in the first round of the Mumbai Open in 2024. She had also played the event in 2017 where she reached the Round of 16.
Eighth seed Polina Iatcenko won the WTA 125 last year in Caldas da Rainha and began this year by making it to the qualifying draw of the Australian Open. Currently at a career high of 159, she will face Yamaguchi, who made the quarterfinals at the Mumbai Open last year. In their solitary previous meeting, Iatcenko got the better of the Japanese in Gurugram.
Probable quarter-finals: Hanne Vandewinkel vs Polina Iatcenko

Fourth Quarter: Tagger fence for Sahaja, Vaishnavi

Seventh seed Lilli Tagger who won the Junior Roland Garros title last year, enters Mumbai after winning the ITF title in Fujairah last week. The WTA 250 Jiangxi runner-up will face 21-year-old Vaishnavi Adkar, bronze medalist of the 2025 Summer World University Games.
The winner of the match will face the victor of the match between Sahaja and Eri Shimizu. Interestingly, Sahaja is yet to make it past the Round of 16 in Mumbai. Shimizu won her previous meeting against Sahaja which was in Bhopal in 2023. However, the Japanese herself has never won an ITF title since 2020.
Mai Hontama, who was once on the brink of cracking the Top 100, is now placed well outside the Top 200. She reached the quarterfinals in Mumbai last year and will look to have a better start this year after winning less than 30 matches last year. She will face Alevtina Ibragimova, who lost in the qualifying draw in Mumbai last year. The winner of this match will face either second seed Darja Semenistaja or Diletta Cherubini.
Semenistaja lost in the first round of the Australian Open and Manila, and also fell in the qualifying draws of Auckland and Hobart. She is currently placed at No.98 in the rankings and will look to equal her head-to-head record against Cherubini. In 2022, the World No. 375 won her sole meeting against the Austrian at the ITF event in Santa Margherita di Pula.
Probable quarter-finals: Lilli Tagger vs Darja Semenistaja
