The build-up to the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 has officially begun, with the International Cricket Council confirming the warm-up fixtures set to take place from June 6 to June 10 across Derby, Loughborough, and Cardiff.

For India, these matches represent a crucial preparatory phase, offering not just game time but an opportunity to fine-tune combinations ahead of the main tournament, which begins on June 12 in England and Wales.

India will play two warm-up matches:

  • June 8: India vs West Indies (Cardiff)

  • June 10: India vs England (Cardiff)

These fixtures are strategically significant. The clash against West Indies provides India an opportunity to test themselves against a side known for explosive batting and unpredictable match dynamics. Meanwhile, the game against hosts England will offer a more structured challenge, given England’s familiarity with conditions and balanced squad composition.

Playing both matches in Cardiff also ensures consistency in conditions, allowing the Indian team to adapt quickly without frequent travel.

Warm-up matches in ICC tournaments are often underestimated, but for a team like India, they serve multiple purposes. Firstly, they allow players to transition from training intensity to match scenarios. After weeks of preparation camps and bilateral series, these games provide the closest simulation of tournament conditions.

Secondly, they help the team management assess combinations. With multiple options in batting order, bowling variations, and fielding setups, these matches will be critical in identifying the most effective XI for the tournament opener.

Lastly, they offer a chance to adapt to English conditions traditionally known for swing, seam movement, and variable weather.

The warm-up schedule features 12 matches, involving all participating teams. Opening day fixtures on June 6 include last edition’s finalists New Zealand and South Africa, setting the tone for a competitive tournament. Emerging teams like Netherlands, Bangladesh, Ireland, and Scotland who qualified through the global qualifiers will also use these games to gain exposure at the highest level.

Several high-profile matchups stand out:

  • England vs Australia (June 8)

  • South Africa vs New Zealand (June 9)

These contests not only build anticipation but also provide benchmarks for teams like India.

India enters the tournament phase as one of the contenders but with areas to address. The team has shown the ability to compete against top sides but has often struggled with consistency in high-pressure situations. The warm-up matches, therefore, are less about results and more about clarity.

Clarity in roles, combinations, and match strategy. The game against West Indies could serve as a test of adaptability, while the England match will likely mirror tournament conditions more closely both in terms of pitch and opposition quality.

One of the key advantages for India is the scheduling structure. By playing both matches in Cardiff, the team avoids excessive travel and gains extended exposure to similar conditions. This continuity can play a crucial role in fine-tuning both batting and bowling approaches. Additionally, the proximity of these matches to the tournament start ensures that players remain in competitive rhythm.

With the main tournament beginning on June 12, the window between warm-ups and competitive matches is minimal. This places added importance on getting the preparation phase right. For India, the objective is clear build momentum, finalise combinations & adapt to conditions

The Women’s T20 World Cup is often decided by fine margins execution in key moments, adaptability under pressure, and clarity in decision-making. The warm-up fixtures offer India a controlled environment to address these aspects before the stakes rise. While the results may not count on paper, their impact on the team’s readiness could define India’s campaign.

As the countdown continues, all eyes will now be on how effectively India uses these two matches to set the tone for the tournament.
