India’s Lakshya Sen made a confident start to his campaign at the Thailand Open 2026, advancing to the Round of 16 with a straight-games win over Singapore’s Jason Teh.

The 7th seed secured a 21-16, 21-17 victory in the opening round, delivering a composed performance that combined control, efficiency, and tactical clarity. More importantly, the win marked a positive return to competitive action following his recent elbow injury during the Thomas Cup.

Facing world No.31 Jason Teh, Lakshya entered the match as the favourite but was tested in phases by the Singaporean’s aggressive play. In the opening game, Lakshya established control early, using his trademark ability to vary pace and direction. While Teh attempted to inject speed into rallies, Lakshya responded with controlled shot selection, forcing errors and maintaining scoreboard pressure.

The Indian gradually built a lead and closed out the first game 21-16 without allowing any late comeback. The second game followed a similar pattern, though Teh showed more resistance. The rallies became tighter, with both players engaging in longer exchanges. However, Lakshya’s composure in key moments proved decisive.

At 17-17, the match was still in balance, but Lakshya elevated his level, winning four consecutive points to seal the game 21-17 and complete the victory in straight sets.

One of the biggest takeaways from this match was Lakshya’s physical condition. Having recently recovered from an elbow injury sustained during the Thomas Cup, there were questions around his readiness and match sharpness. This performance, however, provided encouraging signs. Lakshya moved freely across the court, showed no visible discomfort, and maintained intensity throughout the match. His ability to sustain long rallies and execute attacking shots without hesitation indicated that he has regained a good level of fitness.

For a player whose game relies heavily on speed, agility, and quick transitions, this aspect is critical.

Lakshya’s win was also a reflection of his improved match management. Rather than engaging in high-risk exchanges, he focused on controlling rally tempo and forcing his opponent into errors. His defensive stability allowed him to absorb pressure, while his transitions into attack were measured and effective. This balance between aggression and control has been a key area of development in his game over the past few seasons.

Against Teh, it ensured that there were no major momentum swings, allowing Lakshya to maintain a steady grip on the match.

With this win, Lakshya progresses to the Round of 16, where he is expected to face either Chinese Taipei’s Wang Po Wei or China’s Zhu Xuan Chen. Both potential opponents present different challenges. Wang Po Wei’s game is built on consistency and rally control, while Zhu Xuan Chen brings a more aggressive approach. For Lakshya, the focus will be on maintaining the same level of discipline and execution shown in the opening round.

Given the competitive field at the Super 500 level, the next match will be a step up in intensity.

In mixed doubles, India’s pairing of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto exited in the opening round. They went down in straight games to Denmark’s experienced duo of Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje, losing 9-21, 15-21 in a match that lasted just over 30 minutes. The Danish pair controlled proceedings from the start, using their experience and coordination to dominate rallies. While the Indian duo showed brief resistance in the second game, they were unable to sustain pressure.

The result highlights the gap that still exists for Indian mixed doubles pairs at the highest level, particularly against established European combinations.

From an Indian perspective, Lakshya Sen’s progression provides stability in the men’s singles draw. With several players facing challenging openings, having a seeded player advance comfortably is an important outcome. Lakshya’s performance also reinforces his position as one of India’s most reliable contenders in major tournaments. At the same time, the mixed doubles result underscores the need for greater depth and consistency in doubles disciplines.

For Lakshya Sen, the immediate objective will be to build on this start. Early rounds in tournaments often set the tone, and a controlled opening win provides the foundation for deeper runs. With ranking implications and form both at stake, maintaining momentum will be key.

As the Thailand Open 2026 progresses, Lakshya’s campaign will be closely watched not just for results, but for signs of sustained consistency following his return from injury.

For now, the signs are positive.
